The Bell House Bed & Breakfast
Reviewed February 24, 2013

You cannot beat the service at the Bell House. When the owner found out it was our wedding anniversary weekend, she had appetizers and sparkling wine ready for us on the veranda the afternoon of our arrival. She was also very helpful in helping select a restaurant for the evening. The Bell House is lovely (charming and clean) - we had great views from our room and access to a porch from which to take in the views as we drank our morning coffee.

My wife and I are actively searching for reitrement property in the lower Potomac and Bay area. WE never have stayed in a B&B. We called Anne whom called the next day, Veterans day. We checked in, had a wonderfull tour of the house, being a history seeker, this was great. The evening wine and cheese was wonderful, Anne gave us reviews and menus of resturants in the CB Town and area. We found the Dock Side to be just as she said after choosing to go there.
The morning sun rise with Tea and Coffee on the front porch was a great way to begin the day. After a morning walk we sat down to a breakfast that no hotel could come close to serving. Hearty breakfast is an understatment. I did not eat nor was I hungry until 430pm that day as was the same for my wife. We will return, and are now hooked on Bed and Breakfast staying. Private baths were GREAT!!!! and the robes too.

Thank you Anne

Room Tip: potomac room, best view of the sun rise

We came upon the Bell House Bed and Breakfast through Trip Advisor. We had initially went to Westmoreland State Park. We spent one night there and the cabin was impossible to stay in. Determined to save our anniversary weekend, we left the State Park. Calling various B & B's in the area, I had to leave messages for the proprietors. However, not this one. Anne answered the phone immediately. We booked the room by our word alone. She does not take credit cards. She does take cash or checks.
Anne greeted us at the door and we went in to the front sitting room. This doubles as the breakfast room in the morning. Here, we met the other couple staying in the home. Anne opened some sparkling wine, as both couples were celebrating their anniversaries. She provided us a book and reviews of the local restaurants. Some of these were within walking distance of the home. After the wine, she showed us the home and our rooms which were on the second floor. On the third floor, there is a fourth room and the library. There are two "widows walks" at this level, as well. There is also a window up into the lighted pagoda showing the unique architecture of the home.
We stayed in the Holly Branch room. It was bright, cheerful and warm. The decorations were detailed and appropriate for the historical home. We had a private bathroom with shower stall. The bed was a little high up, but she provided a small wooden stepladder for the height challenged. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable.
I got up very early at the recommendation of Anne and took pictures of the sunrise over the Potomac river. The home sits on the Virginia side of the lower river.
The next morning, the conversation and food where phenomenal!. My husband and I spent about 1 hour learning about Anne's life and how she came to open the B & B. For breakfast, she prepared a yogurt and banana appetizer. Then the main course of a ham "sandwich" that was pressed and a poached egg was on top. This was covered with a sauce that was incredibly delicious. The entire meal was quite filling and would satisfy any hunger.
In closing, we had an incredible "mini-vacation" here at this B & B. Would highly recommend it.

Decided to explore the area briefly before a conference in Wash DC. This was a fantastic find!! Anne is a great human being and will never steer you wrong on places to eat in Colonial Beach. She welcomed us warmly as family and ensured that when we left that we had Fat Freda's crabcakes freshly made. The afternoon wine and cheese was good; breakfast was fantastic. We stayed in the Potomac Sunrise room. I highly recommend this room if you want to see the sunrise over the Potomac in the comfort of your bed. There is, on the 3rd floor, a reading room and a widow walk which I would have spent time in if I was there longer. We hope to return--just to spend more time with Anne and get another Fat Freda crabcake! This place is just bliss...

Room Tip: Potomac Sunrise for a view of the sunrise over the Potomac. The 3rd floor room for privacy.

My husband and I have been staying with Ann (innkeeper) several times per year for the past 8 years. Every visit has been fabulous! Ann is warm, witty and generous and a super star cook! Her breakfasts are to die for...luscious sweet potato cake, unparalleled eggs benedict, unbelievably yummy stuffed french toast...just to name a few dining experiences! The views from the rooms are dazzling...and don't pass up the chance to take in the Potomac at sunrise from the third story balcony! The house is beautiful and beautifully appointed, immaculately clean with comfy beds and cozy ambience! This is THE place to stay in Colonial Beach!

Room Tip: Best view from the windows-Potomac Sunrise, most private and spacious (plus you are just steps from...

My wife and I just stayed here for two nights. Wonderful accommodations. Magnificent breakfast, including good coffee, which is fairly rare these days. Colonial beach is very quiet and unassuming this time of year. Do not come here and miss the opportunity to get a crab cake at Fat Freda's, the biggest and bestest I ever ate. Innkeeper Ann Bolin is great, not the least for making lunch and dinner suggestions that were spot on. Can converse on any subject. Looking forward to our next stay.

The Bell House was a wonderful get away and owner Anne was a delight. The property was charming and steeped in history. The front porch was our favorite perch and the sunrises from there were awesome. Anne is the master of great breakfasts and the wine and cheese in the evenings was nice as well. If you're looking for night life and partying, this is not the place but if you want to just get away and relax, jackpot!

Room Tip: Potomac Sunrise has the best view.
