We both ordered steaks which were cooked perfectly the salad was great and the blue cheese was very good quality. The bread was awesome! We had Ken as our server and he was a true professional even on a slammed night.

Our family had dinner there recently. We were all looking forward to having a great seafood dinner. The only good thing about it was our servers Meghan and Ken who provided excellent service. The food was average and overpriced.Time to make some changes. Mediocrity is not good enough to survive this competitive market.

After the staff at the Refuge Inn recommended AJ's as the place to go, we thought we were safe even with the inconsistent TripAdvisor reviews. We were very wrong. It is pitiful when the best part of the meal is the upgraded salad. We paid extra to upgrade to the spring mix salad because the salads included with the meal were so bland. The bacon, shrimp, cheese soup had too little bacon, overcooked shrimp and too much cheese. The seafood stuffed flounder recommended by the waiter was poorly cooked and the seafood on the flounder looked as if it was pureed. The fried shrimp was overcooked and the crab cakes were more like fried crab dip. The service was okay at best with poor advice and slow attention to everything from refills on the water to refilling the bread basket. Dessert was not even an option!!

Very uneven. One entree, crabcakes, were excellent, which my wife had. I tasted one of them and it was amongst the best I have ever tasted. Lots of crab, well seasoned, no shell. Light and fluffy. The Chincoteague Oysters were at best frozen ones or bought at worst bought at a supermarket. I have never eaten oysters that were simply flat, no bumps or valleys. I ate real Chincoteague's at several other places while on Chincoteague and these at AJ's were definitely not fresh. Very poor entree. And the whole place is a bit pricey for what was presented. Better places to eat on Chincoteague.

We went in late during the off season. The atmosphere was good, the service was good, the food was good. The house salad was a good size and the house dressing was tasty, topped with blue cheese crumbles. The mango mahi was perfectly cooked and the glaze was delicious. The had the seafood smothered flounder was average for a dish of that type. We will try them again to see if it is consistent. The restaurant would not be considered "kid" friendly atmosphere, but the kids menu had some nice options on it that are not often seen (clam strips, shrimp).
