“Great Vacation Spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2011

We loved our stay at the Best Western Chincoteague Island! We reserved our room several weeks in advance. I usually do all my reservations on the internet, but I chose to call to clarify the room types. Since we were traveling with family we decided to stay in the "Papa John Suite." The room was great! There was a main room with a queen bed, sitting area and a kitchenette. There was also a bedroom with a queen bed and a set of bunk beds. The bathroom was huge and included a good size hot tub. The room had a balcony with a nice distant view of the lighthouse. The room was well maintained and very clean.

The highlight of this property is the service. From the moment we checked in we were treated kindly. The front desk was always staffed with two people. They were very helpful in directing us to local attractions. The maintainence staff and cleaning staff were also friendly and efficient. Our mini fridge was not cooling well. A staff member immediately came to our room. When we returned a couple of hours later a new fridge was in place. A dish of candy was sitting there on the counter with a note of apology for the inconvenience. They went above and beyond our expectations.

The hotel is the closest location to the national park. There is a "park like" environment all around you. The landscaping is attractive and creates a feeling of relaxation. The pool was a good size and sparkling clean.

The morning breakfast was great. There was a very nice selection of items. They varied options each morning which was nice since we stayed four days. The ladies that maintained the breakfast area treated us like family.

I do need to note that we were visiting in the "off season" in the spring. The weather was great but I am sure the area is much more crowded during the summer. I felt like we had the town to ourselves.

I would highly recommend the Best Western Plus Chincoteague. We plan to make it a regular part of our spring family getaways in the future.

Room Tip: The "Papa John Suite" is great for traveling families. Sleeps six in comfort and with a...

While the rates were high due to the busy time of year we stayed here, we were pleasantly surprised by the size of the room, the comfort of the beds, and the cleanliness. There was plenty of space for my family of 5. Excellent location right near the bridge to assateague island. Be sure to visit the Island Creamery and the museum that is right next door. They even had bikes to rent which we did not have time to use.

There is no debate. This hotel has the best location on Chincoteague. It literally borders the wildlife refuge on Assateague. (The next closest hotel, the Refuge Inn is a block away and lacks the views.) It is virtually the only hotel that has views of the lighthouse on Assateague. So what does the hotel do with such an advantage? They leverage it well. The grounds are well maintained with abundant gardens and potted plants. While an older hotel, the building is well maintained. Our room appeared to have new or at least newer carpet, and nothing in the room appeared overly worn or out-dated. Every one also had a small but nice balcony which accommodated two chairs. Many balconies had direct views to the refuge and the lighthouse.
While mosquitoes I have heard can be a real problem anywhere on the islands, we were lucky to stay during a few days with a constant light breeze. So, it was quite enjoyable to take our complimentary breakfast out on their veranda just in front of the main lobby. The veranda does, however, have overhead fans which were always on if the breeze were ever to stop. As a runner, the hotel's location was exceptional. All I need do was take a left out of the parking lot and go for an easy four-miler surrounded by a wildlife refuge. I love those kind of runs while traveling! So, if you run, don't forget to take advantage of the location in this way. On-site and CHEAP bike rental is also a plus.
The hotel staff was friendly and approachable--always helping to determine the best restaurant selection.
My only minor con: we are ardent non-smokers--can't stand to be around it. We come from Ohio which has virtually banned all smoking in public everywhere. While much of the building is non-smoking, they do try to accommodate smokers, but in a lousy location. There is actually one of those cigarette ash trays...the kind with the long neck atop which you flick your ashes and butts in (gross) right outside the lobby entrance where we ate our breakfast. I would recommend this be moved to some other location which is a bit more secluded and not in the middle of a common foot-traffic area. Admittedly, we were never present when someone used this location to smoke, but the opportunity to ruin our breakfast was surely there.

Overall, if we ever return to Chincoteage, we really have no reason to consider another hotel. The other branded hotels are, at best, blocks away. Our other favorite the Hampton Inn is actually located at the other end of the island near the causeway from the mainland...no where near the main attraction of Assateague Island.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a third-floor room nearest the refuge for the best view of it and the lighthou...

We stayed here July 4th week, and had a blast. Our room was clean, and not smelly, the breakfast was very good, we liked that the pool was open till 10 pm, as we would eat dinner, then back to the hotel for leisure and swimming. There is a McDonalds across the street from the hotel that was so convenient, i loved that if my kids wanted something we could just pop over to Micky D's for some fast food! The hotel was also next to the National Park, and easy to bike ride.

Hotel was very clean. I read that the McDonalds took away from atmosphere (we hardly noticed it and our room was right out front). We had a distant view of the lighthouse. The staff was friendly and gave us some good advice about where to go and where to eat. Although the wireless access was spotty in our room, we will stay there again.

We took 28 kids and 25 adults on a school camping trip to Chincoteague. We stayed at the Best Western and the staff were all wonderful! They gave us directions to places time after time, they helped us coordinate our trip by providing us with connections to all the best local attractions, and they never once complained about all the kids who overran the hotel for 3 days!
