We saw bald eagles, ponies up close and lots of birds. great history also. Our deiver was great. This is a 7 1/2 mile drive, different than the wildlife loop and worth every pennie. Not expensive.

You'll get to take a bus ride to places that no one else is allowed to drive! The bus driver / guide really knew her stuff - very knowledgeable about the island and all its species. We drove up on two ponies that were about eight feet away from the bus, stopped and took pictures for a considerable amount of time.

My husband and I took the 4 pm tour hoping to see the wild ponies. They did not promise we would but we decided to go because the tour bus goes on a service road closed to other vehicular traffic. We really lucked out! Our guide, Jody, was knowledgeable and did a great job improvising. This type of tour cannot be scripted because you never know what wildlife will show up or Not.
Well, the ponies showed up in great number right alongside the small tour bus as well as a buck, does and their fawn. Egret, heron, and the endangered bushy tail squirrel rounded out the 2 hours.
What was really special was the presence of a woman who was one of the "buy back babes". These women buy the ponies selected to be returned to Assateague and the money is given to the fire department who manages the Pony Swim. This lovely woman searched for her ponies with her binoculars and knew them by name.
Take the tour. Worth the money.

A must do attraction when visiting Chincoteague. The ponies are wild but most will let you touch them. Close to many attractions, close to most hotels. A must do to your list while visiting Chincoteague Island.
