We visited the refuge today by bicycle. It doesn't cost anything to go in on bike or foot. ( $8 per day, $15 per week, $30 per year by vehicle) They have very nice paved bike trails throughout the refuge. Traffic on the road was a bit heavy in spots because it is Pony Penning week. We were practically the only ones on the trail..very tranquil and quiet. Very clean refuge. I would definitely put this on your list of places to visit.

This place was so refreshing and fun! We loved everything and stayed overnight on the island. No insects for us! We were so amazed at all the sights and activities for all who are nature lovers! We will be purchasing the annual membership!

This is a magnificent place! I was there 10 days and rode the main road out to Tom's Cove to take pictures just about every day and was never disappointed.. If you are a birder like me check out the water on left of road across from the pony pen wooden overlook platform. There was a lot of action there every time I went up or down the road multiple days. Great photo shot spot.

I had no luck with the ponies until I took the bus tour that goes from the visitors center. Well worth price of ticket-you get an entirely different view of the area and there were LOTS of horses along the shore on that side. In fact a stallion chased a mare and foal from the waters edge all the way up to the road and they were all right next to the bus.

If you love nature this is an a place not to be missed.

Beautiful park! Gorgeous beaches. Lots of beach parking completely with bathrooms and showers. Nature trails all over including a drive thru loop.
But alas...what we drove the 1+ hrs from OCMD to see, eluded us. No ponies to be found. We were however warned that the famous pony penning was next week and the roundup a had begun and the ponies may be in hiding.
BEWARE OF GREENHEAD FLIES!!! They were attacking my car on the drive thru loop!!!

Checked out the Refuge Center, beach and early morning sunrise, Lighthouse, walked one of the wooded trails (bring water and insect repellent at a minimum) and saw some wildlife and ponies. So much that can be done and enjoyed!
