“Not a great hotel”
Reviewed April 13, 2007

We were driving home from Florida and found this in the guide book. Stopped in and were given a price of $71.00 since the guide book rooms were gone. AAA gave this a 3 star so we thought it couldn't be that bad. They really need to review this property again. We stayed only one night so it was ok since we were tired and it was already after 8:00 pm. The room carpet was spotted, the tables had ring marks, and the walls and ceiling definitely needed updating. The beds were fine. We check these very carefully after we just found bugs in a bed in a Hampton in Orlando. We left at about 7:00 am. Breakfast was bare bones - the coffee was like mud. However the kids liked the powdered mini donughts. Don't expect much at all. This hotel needs major renovation. We would not have stayed if were not just passing through.

We stayed at the Clarion for one night traveling from Florida to Upstate New York. The hotel itself was not bad. The room was fairly clean and large. The noise began at about 4:00am in the hallway. People were talking like it was the middle of the afternoon. If you plan on getting sleep while traveling, this is not the hotel to stay in!!! I was very upset with the slamming of the doors and the very rude people. Even hotel staff was in the hallway around 5:00am on portable radios. Please consider another hotel if sleep is what you want!!

it was a dark and stormy night etc etc...the bed was so comfortable i wanted to stay another night or two. Buffett breakfast had no complaints from me. Coffee good, egg and bacon with toasted bagle was fine. Overall I give it a 4 star rating.

Clarion at Chester, Virginia
Date of stay - October 7, 2006

At this hotel, we were very disappointed. We perceived this hotel to be a good value based on its name recognition. This is a large facility and the upkeep or lack of proper maintenance is evident once one leaves the lobby. Because of the rainy night and poor weather conditions, we lowered our standards and stayed. For the price we paid, over $100 for the night, we expected better. Unfortunately, we experienced the following problems.

- Upon entering the rear door to access our room, the door was found unlatched which compromises the security of the facility and its occupants. The door itself needs to be repaired.
- The hall way and stairs did not have a fresh smell. Rather, a slight musty odor prevailed.
- The room itself did not have a fresh smell and also had a slight musty odor.
- Even though we requested a non-smoking room, one bed of our 2 bed room had significant smoke smell on the pillows and sheets once the spread was turned back. Were the sheets actually changed?
- Lighting in the room was very dull with poor placement of lighting.
- In the morning, the hard wired smoke detector went off for no apparent reason. We were advised that the battery needed to be changed.

Because the Fairfield Inn had no vacancy, we expected to receive a comparable value at this Clarion. What a BIG mistake that was!

We traveled to the area as a group with a sports team recently. The hotel was Ok, not terribly dirty, but not sparklying clean either.

Our toilet did not function properly and maintenance came to fix it with minutes.

Don't count on breakfast, it was poorly stocked and the clerk at the front desk was expected to cover both the desk and the breakfast area. While some of our players were able to get cereal, the milk ran out quickly and and by the time we were able to get it refilled, we had to leave for our game. Not much to chose from and we learned to pick something up on the way to the field instead of counting on the "free hot breakfast" we were promised.

Upon returning to our room after a rainstorm, we found the corner of our room flooded and all my daughters clothes soaked. As we moved her things, we found they had tried to caulk the corner of the wall from ceiling to floor to prevent leakage, but it didn't work. I had to wash all her clothes. There is one washer and dryer in the hotel for guests ($1.50 per machine, per load).

The night staff was friendly and accommodating, often coming the outdoor pool at night to offer to keep the pool open longer hours so the team could stay in longer.

It is an older building that could use some updates. It is dark and dank in the rooms and hallways. It seemed terribly understaffed, but the staff that was there worked very hard. We paid only $70 a night and that was helpful since we had to be in the area for 4-5 nights, but we definately got what we paid for.

  • Liked — Large outdoor pool for the teenagers to enjoy.
  • Disliked — Overall condition of the building... it was dark and dank.

We stayed overnight here while traveling home to Pennsylvania from Florida. It was a rainy Saturday night, and I found the phone # for this Clarion in a coupon book at a rest stop. It was the only motel within many miles that had rooms available. (that should have given us a clue, but we were desperate!) The room was dirty; dead bugs on the air cond. unit, black hairs on the bed sheets and pillows, cob webs on ceiling, and the bathroom sink was clogged with grapes. (my husband just wanted to sleep so bad after driving 12+ hours that he said lets just make the best of it, sleep, and leave early in the am.) So he cleaned out the drain with a straw, we laid towels over the dirty sheets, and used our own pillows. My husband had to sleep on the floor because there were no more cots available. (we have 3 teenage children, so the kids and I got the beds!) I was promised on the phone in advance that we would get a cot.....
The receptionist was rude and unhelpful...and to top it off we paid over $80 for the room. There was supposed to be breakfast the next day, but when we went at 7:30am all the pans of hot food were empty. We each took a few tiny powdered donuts, then got in the car to head home! I sent a detailed letter to the general manager when we got home, but have received no reply 4 weeks later. I know it's too late for a refund, but I'd at least like an apology. My advice is, don't stay here.

We asked for a non-smoking, king room. The bed clothes were not changed. (They were soiled) The room reeked of smoke and an empty cigarette pack was in the waste can.
Upon inspection by the front desk we were given a different room. It was around 1:30AM and we didn't notice that the toilet in our second room didn't flush until early next morning (6:00AM) We left immediately. I was compensated $30 but feel that under the circumstances I am entitled to a full refund. I called headquarters and got a letter back from the hotel in Chester stating that I would not be receiving any other compensation. All we wanted was a CLEAN bed and a toilet that flushed. I am appauled to think of sleeping after someone else. I think $50 is too much for a room without a flushing toilet. Will I ever check into another Clarion Hotel??. . .probably not!
