Thanks to Nail and his staff for a wonderful evening to benefit the Arc of the Piedmont, Great service, wonderful food and a great job all around. 3rd time Clifton has supported the Arc and donated everything, venuw, food, and the staff donated their time to make this a winning event to help raise money for a great local charity. I have nothing but great things to say about the Clifton and its staff and encourage everyone to visit and support the Clifton as they give back and help the community.

I have visited the Clifton Inn on two different occasions and both times I thoroughly enjoyed my stay - it is a beautiful setting, lovely appointed rooms, very pleasant and helpful staff and a wonderful restaurant. Both times I have visited in January and the rates at that time of year have been discounted. The estate is rich with history and the rooms are large with high quality bedding, turndown service, a carafe of sherry in the room - everything to make a restful and enjoyable stay. I highly recommend the Cliftoon Inn and look forward to my next stay.

Room Tip: The rooms in the Inn are large and lovely and very quiet.

Our stay was pleasant, though we got the impression that because there aren't many guests right now, we were a bit of a distraction. The good side of that: we were upgraded to a better room (the Jefferson- hence the good value rating!), the downside: we were told we could fish and play tennis- but then they were unable or unwilling to find a tennis partner to hit with, and the fishing rods they had were missing hooks and tackle... so we got to do neither.

The property IS beautiful by the way. We ate at the inn and the chef (who we assumed wasn't there himself since there were almost no diners) really is terrific... the food was much better/more interesting that we expected. The service was great- friendly youngsters. The wine-by-the-glass choices are surprisingly poor considering the quality of the food.

As we understand it Clifton is now owned by a large corporation and not by any locals, if that matters to you. Also they may tell you the house belonged to Jefferson's daughter. At Monticello they told us it was actually her husband's barn... while they lived somewhere else nearby. Side note: Visiting Monticello was fantastic.

Room Tip: The rates online are better than on the phone. Get an upgrade if you can. Bring your own tennis equipment and fishing hooks!

First off, let me say that in general, we love the Clifton. We were married here a few years ago and have stayed in almost every room from the largest (The Carriage House) to the smallest (The Garden Room). The overall atmosphere is very romantic and charming... laid back elegance with a European flair... where colonial Virginia meets French country. I especially like it in the spring when the vegetation is in full bloom.

Re: the Clifton's restaurant, it was once amazing. Several guests at our wedding said it was both the nicest wedding venue they'd ever been to... as well as having best food. We return to the Clifton every year for our anniversary, for the most part having a good experience. However, this September, we did not have such a great experience in their restaurant. I don't know if they've recently changed their chef or if it was just an "off" menu, but the food was pretty awful. The kitchen is known for their unusual mix of ingredients, but this particular menu missed the mark... by a lot. Everything we ordered tasted like potpourri... the red meat was chewy, the pork overdone, and both of the "hot dishes" we ordered, arrived cold. The champagne was excellent and we still had fun (mostly, because of the memories), but we paid over $200 for dinner and walked away hungry. What was once gourmet has become a gourmess... and though it breaks my heart to say it, we won't be going back until the restaurant improves.

Room Tip: Choose the Carriage House. It's pricey, but worth it for a special occasion. Avoid the rooms in the Collina Farmhouse, unless you plan to rent out the entire house for a wedding or family gathering. The Collina rooms are cute, but too far from the inn.

Thank you for submitting overall, an absolutely glowing review of the Clifton Inn. We really appreciate it. We love hearing feedback such as the nicest wedding venue ... the overall atmosphere is romantic and charming ...etc.
But, we are not so happy that Glowgirl did not enjoy dinner with us and this has been shared with our entire team here. We use as much locally sourced and organic produce as possible, so naturally our menu changes regularly depending on what is in season. Our kitchen has won national recognition along with our current Chef Tucker for its innovative flair, artisanal and seasonal scope. We tend to be very proud of what our Kitchen produces and the level of service which our Restaurant team delivers it.
However, we recognize in this particular case that Glowgirl was underwhelmed by it and we would love to speak to her regarding this as we are 100% sure that her next meal she will absolutely love.

Kind regards,

Niall Reid

I recently stayed at the Clifton Inn for a company retreat. The facility and service was wonderful, and we'll definitely be returning. We had dinner in the wine cellar, which was a great atmosphere and highly recommended for a party of 8-12 guests. Kudos Clifton Inn.
