“Very good food, good experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2010

We went here for our anniversary dinner; thought it would be a different experience. For better or worse, it was Restaurant Week, so there was a fixed menu. So we didn't get to sample a whole lot, but the prices were very reasonable. I was very happy with my food, it was generally interesting and tasty. Some of the sides were a little plain (fried zucchini was pretty bland). But generally very good. The service was good, but the atmosphere was a downer. At peak dinner time, there were maybe 8 people eating. That definitely takes away from the overall experience. Not sure what is going on there.

“Finally, great food, great price, and great service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2010

I recently had dinner with my family at The Shebeen. It was suggested to us by a server at a local bed and breakfast we were staying. We were heading to the downtown mall, but drove through the parking lot and "found" The Shebeen. We always like to support local business, and am I glad we did this time!
The food is fresh, the atmosphere is authentic....it was like walking into South Africa! All of us were very happy with our food. The ingredients seem to be very fresh and the food was plentiful. You definitely won't leave hungry or light in your wallet. What a great value! Add to it--the service is great too!
We can't wait to come back on our next trip back to Charlottesville.

Really delicious food: a rich cream of tomato soup (tasted like it had fennel in it?), an amazing clove-infused vegetarian stew, and mango pie were all great. Service was indifferent and the place was very noisy. The African after-dinner liqueur was like Bailey's mixed with Robitussin. Guiness on tap but not well-poured--no head!

“Great food, Great atmosphere, a little on the pricey side, but worth it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2010

A little expensive, but amazing food with plenty of diversity. A small bar near the entrance is great for grabbing a few drinks while you wait for your table but it will occasionally be crowded late at night with locals watching a soccer or rugby match on the TVs. Atmosphere makes you feel like you've just been dropped off at some South African country club. Great place for a date, if you're willing to fork out the extra money for some exotic cuisine. Service has always been superb. Even had the pleasure of meeting the owner of the restaurant a couple of times. Reservations are only accepted for parties of 10 or more.
