Description: The Japanese word ten can mean “heaven", “above" or “celebration" and the dining experience at TEN modern Japanese restaurant is all of these things.TEN approaches traditional Japanese dishes as if they were works of modern art. The superior ingredients are the building blocks of inspiration and the plates are crafted to please both the palate and the eye. Superior products are used and the seafood arrives daily from fishing auctions in Japan and Hawaii. Beyond the incredibly fresh sushi, the menu features a variety of hot and cold ala carte items and offers many choices for vegetarians as well as non-seafood eaters. The bar menu boasts an extensive list of Sake, carefully selected in conjunction with specialty importers and a prominent Sake sommelier. Ten also features an extensive wine list, and specialty cocktails using unique ingredients such as the “Ten" which is comprised of sake, vodka, aloe juice, and sweet Japanese plums called momokochan. The restaurant's dining room was designed by Formwork of Charlottesville and is divided according to dark and light. The gently lit front room celebrates a twenty foot high ceiling and grand windows to create a space inspired by the night sky. Muted colors diminish perception and create a "boundless" spatial sense. The subtly reflective ceiling panels pick up a shimmering starlight effect from the dimmed “candle" sconces. The "night" space also includes the beverage bar, which is accented with luminous glass tube "bouquets" and other shimmering light effects. Intimate, high backed booth seating adds to the nocturnal mood of this space. The brighter "day" seating area is inspired by air travel, clouds. The sushi bar is rendered as a crisp white box, softened with a warm olive wood. Bright iridescent fabrics highlight the banquette seating and the relatively low ceiling is punctuated by twelve-foot high coffers at varying the "day sky" feeling of the space.

Had the pleasure of dining here last night with my son, 7 years old, and it was a delight. very chill interior with lots of great but soft lighting...saw several people holding candles and iPhones up to the menu! Edamame was perfectly cooked and salted; seaweed salad was tangy and nicely presented; and our dragon roll had a great flavor and was visually appealing. Our big culinary surprise was the red miso soup we decided to finish with. Smoky with a great salt ratio and firm, tofu. My only complaint was that we got forgotten a bit at the end...had to wait about 5 minutes to order the miso. All in all a great meal

The sushi is outstanding in both freshness and variety. Servers are knowledgeable about selections. Best martinis and largest selection of sakes in the area. Only "problem" is it's very expensive. But, you get what you pay for.

Excellent Japanese restaurant. Rates right up there with the best in NYC, Miami, and Chicago and we are so fortunate to have it here in Charlottesville. Always fresh, always wonderful. This restaurant has fresh toro (several types) every day and it is absolutely perfect. I have visited this restaurant many times and have tried many items on the menu. Have never been disappointed! We live between Richmond and Charlottesville and whenever we have guests visiting we bring them here. Another big plus is Charlottesville itself, a beautiful town!!! Don't miss out on this amazing restaurant and enjoy the walk down Main Street. So many fantastic little places to discover and great Japanese food too!!!

I took my daughter and 3 of her friends here. The beef entree was probably the best. The sushi rolls were a little on the expensive side and a little smaller than what we have had in Hawaii, CA, and in northern VA. A little too much Korean kimchi influence across the menu.

One of my colleagues suggested Ten for a dinner out with some girlfriends. I never would have seen it on the downtown mall since it's located on the 2nd story of one of the buildings. Once you walk up, you're transported to a totally unexpected and funky atmosphere. We loved everything we tried, but the tempura appetizers were amazing. I'll be back!
