Description: The Japanese word ten can mean “heaven", “above" or “celebration" and the dining experience at TEN modern Japanese restaurant is all of these things.TEN approaches traditional Japanese dishes as if they were works of modern art. The superior ingredients are the building blocks of inspiration and the plates are crafted to please both the palate and the eye. Superior products are used and the seafood arrives daily from fishing auctions in Japan and Hawaii. Beyond the incredibly fresh sushi, the menu features a variety of hot and cold ala carte items and offers many choices for vegetarians as well as non-seafood eaters. The bar menu boasts an extensive list of Sake, carefully selected in conjunction with specialty importers and a prominent Sake sommelier. Ten also features an extensive wine list, and specialty cocktails using unique ingredients such as the “Ten" which is comprised of sake, vodka, aloe juice, and sweet Japanese plums called momokochan. The restaurant's dining room was designed by Formwork of Charlottesville and is divided according to dark and light. The gently lit front room celebrates a twenty foot high ceiling and grand windows to create a space inspired by the night sky. Muted colors diminish perception and create a "boundless" spatial sense. The subtly reflective ceiling panels pick up a shimmering starlight effect from the dimmed “candle" sconces. The "night" space also includes the beverage bar, which is accented with luminous glass tube "bouquets" and other shimmering light effects. Intimate, high backed booth seating adds to the nocturnal mood of this space. The brighter "day" seating area is inspired by air travel, clouds. The sushi bar is rendered as a crisp white box, softened with a warm olive wood. Bright iridescent fabrics highlight the banquette seating and the relatively low ceiling is punctuated by twelve-foot high coffers at varying the "day sky" feeling of the space.

“Wonderful sushi”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

We did not have reservations for a Friday night on the pedestrian mall in downtown Charlottesville...not too bright - the waits were between 45 minutes to 2 hours at most of the eating establishments with outdoor tables. But Ten had a table clear just as we walked up to the hostess. We enjoyed a nice crisp Pinot Gris and watched the diverse groups of folks walk up and down the mall ...from a group of Lady Gaga lookalikes a to an UVA men's choir in khakis and blazers. We ordered two types of sushi and the portions were generous and so tasty. If you feel like some good sushi in Charlottesville, this is the place.

“Really delicious sushi!”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

I visited here during a business trip to Virginia and it was right down the street from the Omni where I was staying- literally a two minute walk. I would recommend visiting the promenade if you are staying at the Omni- and don’t worry it is a very safe walk even if you are by yourself on business.

Dinner was very good- the steak skewers were very delicious but small- I would recommend ordering the trio for the biggest bang for your buck. The sushi was very good and fresh and the avocado tempura was very good. This was a delicious fun dinner that I ate outside on the patio. I could see how this dinner could get expensive though if you had a large appetite or were paying for multiple people. Overall it was a very nice classy upscale dinner which would be perfect for a date night or just a night out! I ordered the chocolate cake for dessert and it was tasty and the wasabi powder on the top was a nice twist!

“Great Sushi!”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

Located on the mall, the entrance is very low-key, just a small sign leading to stairwell, I thought it would be some hole in the wall. Not so, Ten has a very large and modern interior, its quite upscale. And while it has a Japanese sensibility, it does not scream "traditional Japanese". They have a nice selection of innovative sushi rolls, definitely try the one with honey! And there is one with plum, too (excellent!). My favorite was though, was the Chesapeake Bay. Pleasant atmosphere, good service. A bit pricey, but very high quality so I was okay with that.

“Delicious food”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

Delicious food and amazing tapas to pick from. The only down side is its quite expensive and sometimes the wait is long. Very fun for a dinner date, going out with friends or family.

“Great Sushi in Charlottesville”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

We were looking for a good sushi place in Charlottesville and found this one online. We love the downtown mall area and have found several places to eat here that we like. Ten was no different. We had both sashimi and a couple of rolls. The sashimi was fresh and delicious. The rolls were also very good! We wanted one more roll, but when we tried to order, our waiter said the kitchen was closed, thus the four stars. Our waiter knew we might want another roll, but didn't let us know the kitchen was closing until we tried to order. We were disappointed. We will go back when in Charlottesville.
