Description: The Japanese word ten can mean “heaven", “above" or “celebration" and the dining experience at TEN modern Japanese restaurant is all of these things.TEN approaches traditional Japanese dishes as if they were works of modern art. The superior ingredients are the building blocks of inspiration and the plates are crafted to please both the palate and the eye. Superior products are used and the seafood arrives daily from fishing auctions in Japan and Hawaii. Beyond the incredibly fresh sushi, the menu features a variety of hot and cold ala carte items and offers many choices for vegetarians as well as non-seafood eaters. The bar menu boasts an extensive list of Sake, carefully selected in conjunction with specialty importers and a prominent Sake sommelier. Ten also features an extensive wine list, and specialty cocktails using unique ingredients such as the “Ten" which is comprised of sake, vodka, aloe juice, and sweet Japanese plums called momokochan. The restaurant's dining room was designed by Formwork of Charlottesville and is divided according to dark and light. The gently lit front room celebrates a twenty foot high ceiling and grand windows to create a space inspired by the night sky. Muted colors diminish perception and create a "boundless" spatial sense. The subtly reflective ceiling panels pick up a shimmering starlight effect from the dimmed “candle" sconces. The "night" space also includes the beverage bar, which is accented with luminous glass tube "bouquets" and other shimmering light effects. Intimate, high backed booth seating adds to the nocturnal mood of this space. The brighter "day" seating area is inspired by air travel, clouds. The sushi bar is rendered as a crisp white box, softened with a warm olive wood. Bright iridescent fabrics highlight the banquette seating and the relatively low ceiling is punctuated by twelve-foot high coffers at varying the "day sky" feeling of the space.

I dined at Ten as a party of 3 on a recent Friday night. We started with drinks upstairs in the restaurant. The cocktail menu is nice and the decor is beautiful, sleek and modern. Cocktails were about average as far as the cost goes, but if I had to be honest I thought there was too much alcohol in them. We then moved outside to the mall area for dinner. We were one of about 10-12 tables and there appeared to only be one server for all of us. It took a while, maybe 10 minutes, just to get water. Luckily we weren't in a hurry. The waitress was very nice and knowledgeable, but she just seemed overwhelmed by the number of covers. Overall, the sushi was pretty good. We especially enjoyed the tempura avocado and the tempura shrimp. When ordering, just be aware that the menu is designed to be sort of tapas style. We ordered a few plates at a time and our food came out as it was ready.

We'll probably go back, but we'll try it on a weeknight when it's bound to be less crowded (or eat upstairs were there were more servers).

“Great place for drinks!”
Reviewed March 4, 2007

My husband and I visited the new hot spot, Ten, in Charlottesville in March 2007. We did not eat there, but the sushi looked wonderful. This zen-like bar is located over the Blue Light Grill in the historic downtown area of Charlottesville. The decor was super cool with lanterns all over the walls and had a fiber optic bar. We sat in a seating area over by the bar area that had big sofas against the giant windows overlooking the downtown activity. The wait staff was very friendly and went over the top to make sure you had everything that you needed. We thought that for sure this place would be snooty, but it was far from that. There is a dining area in another part of this enormous open space which is located near the back part of the building. The place was mobbed, but the service did not suffer because of this. Basically, I got the feeling that this new bar is indeed where "the beautiful people" gather and have nice cocktails and good sushi. We will definitely visit Ten again when we are in Charlottesville!
