“Nice, but overpriced”
Reviewed April 25, 2010

When the least little thing is going on in C'Ville, the site of the University of Virginia, it can be difficult to find a decent room for a reasonable price. We paid well over $200 for a room that was a little bit better than a Hampton Inn, but comparable. The hotel is modern and well-appointed, just outside C'Ville off I-64. All the ususal amenities, but we didn't use the pool or workout room. A decent restaurant, with a typical limited Hilton menu (not necessarily a bad thing). Other choices nearby for eating. Three problems: the mini-fridge made a lot of noise when the compressor ran, and we finally had to turn it off; the bathtub valve was loose and wiggly, and; the GFCI bath outlet was intermittent (you had to jiggle the plug to get the hairdryer to work). When I'm paying $200 a night, problems like that are unacceptable.

My wife and I were both very pleased with our stay at this HGI property earlier this month. Our room was spotless, the bedding very comfortable, and the setting was serene (overlooking a small lake with a pair of swans). There was ample parking close to the hotel. The staff at the front desk and in the restaurant were uniformly pleasant to work with. For folks visiting the University of Virginia, or touring the area (the location is a quick 10-minute drive to Jefferson's Monticello) this Hilton Garden Inn is the ideal choice.

A nice hotel in a quiet location just outside of the downtown area. Hotel is within 10 minute drive of Monticello. The staff was was very friendly and helpful. If you don't want to ask the desk for help, the lobby has lots of pamphlets/maps on Charlottesville. First impressions were good, and the hotel lobby was roomy and nicely decorated. It was nice little extra having a snack bar located near the front desk to purchase drinks, candy, etc. Hotel has a small restaurant in the lobby and had a good continental breakfast there in the morning that was part of my package. Plenty of parking. The room was very clean and the pillows were soft. Easy drive to get into downtown Charlottesville, UVA, or over to Rt 29 to additional strip malls, restaurants and movie theaters. Would stay here again.

heavy business traveler, always stayed at Omni or Boar's Head, sometimes Holiday Inn in Charlottesville or HIX in Orange. Since my first stay at this hotel in January, it is the only hotel I stay in now in Charlottesville. Not to sound sappy, but they "just plain do everything right". One of their employees (Drew) always goes out of his way to take care of my needs.

My young son (11) was having bad leg pains (growing pains, probably) -- went to get some aspirin, and he offered to open the hot tub (it had just closed) if I thought soaking in it would help my son. For any managers of hotels reading this review -- how many people do you think I have relayed that story to? Your answer is probably low.

Customer service is king, and this hotel has it in spades.

This hotel has a lot going for it. It seems new, the restaurant is light and airy, the staff is very nice and helpful, the small fitness center (bike, treadmill, elliptical) was nice, and the business center was fine. We got a rate of $149 including breakfast for three people. As Hilton Honors members were received 2 free bottles of water and 500 points if we spent $25 in the restaurant. The hotel was quiet and even the teams of soccer-playing boys who had taken over the hotel in the evening seemed to quiet down at a reasonable hour.

However, we did see a bug crawling across the bed. I'm not sure what kind of bug it was but it looked like the pictures of bed bugs were saw on the internet. We tore the beds apart and didn't see any other bugs. When I showed the bug to the front desk, they were very apologetic and reduced our bill by half. If it hadn't been for the bug, I would recommend this hotel.

If you don't have a car, this hotel isn't close to anything.

Dear Azogal,

Thank you for staying with us at the Hilton Garden Inn Charlottesville, we were happy to have the opportunity to serve you and hope that you will give us the opportunitya again in the future. Also, thank you for your comments regarding our staff and accomodations.

Your concerns about finding a bug in your room are our concerns as well. Upon your departure we called in our professional pest control service who identified the bug as a carpet beetle and also perfomed a thorough inspection of your room and neighboring rooms as well as other areas throughout the property. Finding no evidence of additional bugs present.

In addition, we would like to add that we offer an on demand complimentary shuttle service to area attractions, restaurants and events.

We hope that you will consider the Hilton Garden Inn again on your next visit to the Charlottesville area.

Thank you

I used to be such a big fan of HGI but I have just been unimpressed with the brand lately. This is definitely a better HGI, nice finishes, very professional staff, good sound insulation in the rooms, flat screen TVs, etc. But the sleep comfort beds just don't have it going on, I couldn't find the control and did not want to be troubled with digging for it in the nooks and crannies of the bed. The bed was hard for my wife and I and the sheets were not very soft.

The front desk staff was very friendly and accommodating, the breakfast staff was okay, a bit curmodgeony but that's passable in the morning.

The entire staff was great! The initial room seemed to have a faint smoke smell so we asked to switch rooms. The front desk supervisor could not have been more accommodating. She offered an apology and quickly processed keys to a different room. Richard and Milton were a joy to converse with as they drove us to/from downtown in the hotel shuttle. Drew was extremely helpful when we called to make our reservation. Thank you, HGI staff!
