I never thought there was that much difference in fried chicken until I tasted the locally famous Michie Tavern fried chicken. (Pronounced "Mickey") Their lunch buffet is not that diverse, but the foods that they do offer are outstanding and best in class. The peach cobbler is also locally famous. It is a little pricey and somewhat touristy (costumed servers) but the food is THAT good that locals eat there regularly.

Be prepared to taste some savory cuisine, much of it from a bygone era when people ate simply. Whatever you do, no matter what else you order, be SURE to try the escalloped tomatoes. This place does for a tomato what some do with chicken and dumplings. So yummy good.

Excellent food and the area around is very nice and sereen. Go hungry there is alot of choices and th tour is very good too. I would suggest seeing Ash Lawn first, then got to Monticello followed by Michie Tavern. That way you are going back down the mountain.

Although the tavern was quite busy, we were seated without having to wait more than a few minutes. Authentic atmosphere. The staff members were extremely helpful and friendly. Most amazing pulled pork and fried chicken. Good corn bread.

If you're stopping in for an all-you-can-eat lunch then this is a good spot. The fried chicken is my favorite. Come hungry though as its not the cheapest place to eat lunch. The craft shops are fun to browse around and come with the typical tourist attraction prices -- no news there. You will find well made unique items however. As far as the tour goes I'd skip it. The tour guide we had was not knowledgeable nor interesting. Perhaps she was new? Overall though, stop in for lunch and have a look around the craft shops either before or after visiting Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, which is just a bit further up the road.
