We came to Ash Lawn-Highland after seeing Monticello. It is so neat to see how two important men in history lived. This place was nice seeing how more middle type class place it was. You felt like it was a home more than a show piece The lawn was beautiful to walk around and see. Does not take as long as Monticello but most certainly a must see place.

What made this historic site worthwhile was the personal aspects of the house. You felt like a real visitor to the Monroe home - many original items and a sense that real people had recently lived there. It is not as grand and physically impressive as Monticello or Montpelier but it definitely belongs on your to do list while in Charlottesville.

Since it was a small middle class home of the period there wasn't much to see in that regard. There were 3 children among the people on the tour and the docent focused on them leaving us to feel we were in a 4th grade history class. She didn't talk about Monroe's contribution to the founding of the country. In our experience the tour guide makes the tour and this just left us flat.

We had a well informed guide, but he was well informed on James Monroe, himself, and not as informed on the house we were touring. There were many things that he could have pointed out in the house, but unless a question was specifically asked about something we were viewing in the house, he did not address the issue. After the tour, we were able to view the grounds and the kitchen area on our own and I want to point out that the young woman who was in the kitchen to answer questions was very informative on the items that were in there. We learned a lot from her about cooking and eating in early America.

In contrast to the grandeur of Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland gives an idea of the way middle class landowners lived in early Virginia. My favorite part was a description of how Monroe's family and guests all slept in the same room to keep warm!
