“Simple, Yet Quite Nice”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

I was part of a wedding here a couple weeks ago. The set-up for the wedding, in the lawn by James Monroe's statue, was a beautiful back-drop for a wedding. The outdoor pavilion is a convenient place for a reception with ample room for a decent sized (~100 person) reception.

The house itself is quite small. Be sure to duck when entering to avoid hitting your head. The tour guides will make sure you are aware of the obstacle.

The tour guide we had was quite knowledgable and was able to speak to more than just the decor of the house and provide insight into James Monroe as a person.

This home is a stark contrast to Monticello. The house is small and the decor is simple. But it feels much more like a home than Monticello.

Definitely worth a couple hours, especially when it is only a couple miles from Monticello

“surprised at its beauty”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

this house of james monroe sits in one of the most picturesque rolling countrysides. you can see all the pastures and farm land that surrounds and the mountains in the distance. He was very instrumental in getting things done for our country and which was brought out by our tour guide, many details that i was unaware of before, very worthwhile and interesting

“A hidden gem”
Reviewed April 24, 2013 via mobile

Its not what youd expect. The real house is behind the mansion you see when you walk up. Its a very humble home but you get a real sense of Monroes presence since it is so full of his own posessesions which isnt so true for some other locations. The tour guide made the real difference here. Ours was Katherine F and she really brought Monroe to life. The attraction is a little overpriced but we are glad we went.

“James Monroe's Home”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

Ash Lawn appeared to be a home that had a couple wings added to it to give more space. The home was not as fancy as Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home.

They have concerts on the grounds in the summer and you can order a boxed meal.

“Nice and quaint presidential home”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

We really liked visiting Ash Lawn-Highland. Not as big nor as extravagant as the other nearby presidential home but you do feel at home. Nice tour of the home. Guide and staff were nice, friendly and informative. Highly recommend seeing this home along with the others in the area.
