The tour that we received at Ash Lawn-Highland was great. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed walking the grounds and looking at the beautiful scenery. If you are in the area visiting Monticello it is definitely worth the drive around the corner to see President Monroe's house.

We had the great delight to meet Mr. Monroe recently when visiting Ash Lawn Highland. The first person interpreter who portrayed our fifth president did a wonderful job of describing some of the challenges Mr. Monroe and our nation faced in the time in which the Missouri Compromise was being worked out. The house guide was also very knowledgeable, her grasp of the details of the history of the home was impressive. The service yard of the house and out buildings helped flesh out a feeling of what life was like for the gentry here in Virginia some 200 years ago. The gardens seemed promising but on the day we visited there was a cold rain and so we left exploring those until the next time we visit.

Well worth a visit although not so much to see as at Monticello. The guide was a fount of all knowledge about the house and James Munro.

This was a wonderful look at the real home of a president. Monticello has its own charm, but this showed how the economics of the presidency in those days could break a man. The house was charming. The grounds seemed very realistic. Their were new baby lambs in the meadow and peacocks in thier pens. Their was an amazing amount of actual furnishings from the original house. Our tourguide was excellent and entertaining. She knew all the little details that bring the story to life.

As other reviewers have noted, this place is very low-key when compared with Monticello nearby. Nonetheless, we found it interesting. The guide was very entertaining with some funny anecdotes. He spoke a million miles an hour, so you had to concentrate or you might miss something! Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
