“Surprising Simplicity & Great Tour”
Reviewed August 16, 2012

Several months back we visited Monticello and had a great tour there. Anybody who has seen Jefferson's home can leave in astonishment at all his great accomplishments. The tour however is usually always crowded.

In contrast to Monticello, Ash Lawn Highlands was much more laid back. With less visitors than Monticello, an absolutely lovely drive through large ash trees and a very experienced tour guide, made our visit memorable.

Visit in the late afternoon, before they close, or early morning, when the sunny light is golden. Make sure to wonder around the property to see the gardens, sheep and other animals.

“Pleasant visit”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe is a nice stop while in Charlottesville. The guided house tour was very informative and it lasted for about 30 minutes. Most of the furniture and decorations were the actual belongings of the Monroes. Ash Lawn-Highland is very close to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson and both estates can be seen on the same day.

“Great tour!”

President Monroe's house... while not as breathtaking as Monticello, it is very beautiful in it's own way.

“Not the best home of a President”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

This was near Monticello and was the home of James Monroe when he was President but it is not outstanding. The home has been extensively remodeled. You do not get a sense of James Monroe from the home or from the guides. They do an excellent job of talking about the house but you do not feel that this was the home of James Monroe like you get at Mount Vernon, Monticello or Montpelier

“not Monticello”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

The site could learn alot from its bigger neighbor, Monticello. The tour guide here, was very nice, but not passionate about the topics. The rooms do not feel authentic, and it all feels like it needs a good restoration.
