When we showed up a tour was just getting started so we did not have to wait. But beware, I have heard of many people having to wait for a long time if they arrive well in advance of a tour. This is a much more intimate tour than Monticello and it really gives you insight to Monroe. I really think you need to see both homes while you are here to see how different these two great men were.

Home of James Monroe is just a few minutes from Monticello. A much smaller Plantation and home than Monticello but equal in Presidential history and interest. Include it in your trip.

President Monroe built and lived in this house with his wife and two daughters. There are original furniture, art work and other historical artifacts. The guided tour goes into detail about Monroe and all the offices he held ending with being president. It is truly an interesting history of a great man and worth visiting. There are AAA and senior discounts.

After visiting Monticello, we drove 2 miles down the road to see James Monroe's home. Be sure to get "the Colonel" as your tour guide. You won't be disappointed !!!

Home of James Monroe and his family. Tour was very interesting and informative. House contains many original pieces that belonged to the family. House and grounds have been well kept. Beautiful setting and much known history of the family available. Really enjoyed the tour.
