“Good tour, great institution”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2012

Visited UVa. with some friends who had never been before. The guide we had was very knowledgeable, and the "grounds" were nice, even in the winter. I was surprised to learn that the University is the school in the U.S. listed as a World Heritage Site. After taking the tour, I can see why.

“Academical Village/Rotunda a must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2012

First of all: parking. Park in a garage downtown off the pedestrian mall near the Visitors Center and take the free trolley to the University. The folks at the visitor's center will give you directions, maps, and validate 2 hours of parking. The trolley lets you sightsee to and from the campus.

There is a trolley stop at the Chapel besides The Rotunda as well as directly in front. For a guided tour of the Rotunda and the Academical Village, go to the back of the Rotunda and beneath the stairs to entrance where you can sign up for free tour. Takesabout an hour.

Our guide provided all the details about the Rotunda and Village you could ask for as well as asking students living on the lawn rooms of the Village to let us take a look at the rooms. Seems this is a privilege for certain seniors to be allowed to live there.....although the rooms have no bathrooms. That requires an outside trip to a separate bathroom building even in the winter season....I understand they are provided robes to go with the room.

The Rotunda and the Village were interesting as well as their history and Jefferson's. Add that to the UVA campus and it made for good tour.

It is worth visiting the quad and seeing the rotunda, neither costs anything.
