This mansion house now converted to a museum sits atop a hill with a view of a swan pond below. It is a truly beautiful spot. The museum houses aboriginal artwork which is not commonly seen and thus makes it a most worthwhile visit. The staff were particularly helpful. While in Charlottesville, be sure and put this on your itinerary. An hour is plenty time to allow.

I'm glad you enjoyed our location as much as our collection. You are right that the musem is uncommon - we are the only museum in the United States dedicated to Australian Aboriginal art! Thanks for your review.

Big collection of aboriginal art in a beautiful old house - excellent special exhibits. Quiet setting good for contemplating these fascinating objects. Didactics are great. It's a remarkable opportunity, a unique artistic/ethnographic museum out here in the middle of Virginia!

When a museum is praised as having the largest collection of aboriginal Australian in the US, I expected more than 20-25 pieces of art. What was there was interesting, but there's not much there.

This beautiful small museum up on a hill in the Pantops section of Charlottesville VA brings traditional and contemporary Australian Aboriginal art work to life. This is one of the few places in the United States where you can experience art that introduces the viewer to Aboriginal peoples' art and culture. Tour on your own or be part of a guided tour. In conjunction with the University of Virginia the museum offers permanent as well as changing art displays, talks by visiting Australian Aboriginal artists as well as continuing ed classes. Definitely a hidden treasure in historic Charlottesville.
