“A most Beautiful Walkway”

Saunders-Monticello Trail

The Saunders Trail is a 2+ mile Landscaped walkway ( 1/3 is sculptured elevated bridgework ) which surpentines in a most ecologically friendly manner along the North-East end of Carter's Mountain parallel to Virginia Rt 53, up to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. A local favorite...with a picnic area available across the fantastic stone bridge that leads from the Trail to the grounds of Monticello, proper.

Definitely necessary to stretch your legs from driving around town so much. Park at the bottom of the hill and walk the whole way to the visitor's center - you go through a lot of cool woods and see some good nature.

This is indeed a fun way to walk up the mountain to Monticello, but it's also a popular place just to be outdoors and get some exercise. The trail winds through the woods at a grade gradual enough for wheelchairs (and senior citizens on foot). An auxiliary parking lot across Rt. 53 from the bottom of the trail is helpful at crowded times.

Two miles each way with a very gradual accent. Good parking at the base and the end terminates at the Monticello Visitor Center which is great for a cup of coffee and a snack before waling back down. A picnic area near the top is great if you bring your lunch or snack along. Beautiful all year long!

This combo boardwalk and trail is an amazing feature of Charlottesville. I wish they allowed dogs the entire way up, but there are enough side trails to get everyone some exercise.
