On a college visit to UVA we visited the Downtown Mall. Wish that we had not eaten here. I had the grilled Caesar chicken salad, which the waitress recommended. The chicken was not grilled, perhaps it was pre packaged and very tasteless. Overall a waste of money. Eat elsewhere.

On the mall in downtown Charlottesville, Sal's presents plentiful Italian fare that is decent enough for the south (sorry about the generalization, but good Italian food is hard to come by south of the Mason-Dixon line). It is a small place with a pizza hearth in the back of the restaurant. The staff is welcoming, but the one drawback is that when guests enter and leave the restaurant the weather enters the restaurant. The day we were there it was cold and even thought we are seated away from the door, it got chilly every time someone came and went. All in all, if you do not want one of the typical loud pub like places on the mall and prefer some comfort food, Sal's is a good choice.

We were walking around the mall looking for someplace to eat that didn't have a ridiculous wait. We had visited wineries all day and were hungry. Sal's did not have a wait and that was the first good thing about dinner. The service was great. 3 of the 4 of us ordered salad, but when our entrees arrived before the salads our waitress was so apologetic. She offered to bring them out, but we declined. One of the owners overheard the exchange, came over to our table, apologized, and invited us to order dessert on the house. Our dinner was amazing. Each meal was flavorful and nicely presented. Then came the desserts. We did not have to remind the staff of the dessert offer. The owner brought a sampler plate of cannoli, tiramisu, and cheesecake. We will definitely go back when in Charlottesville.

My partner and I met here 3 years ago and ordered their Pizza Bianca with some Calimari. I thought it would be cute to have our anniversary there this year, and we ordered the exact same thing. I called ahead and placed a reservation. It was downpour snowing outside, so we went a little early so as not to make anybody have to drive in horrid conditions. They accepted us early with open arms.

We arrived to an empty boutique style Italian restaurant with a 5 star atmosphere. The opening appetizers were superb. Mozzarella triangles with a lovely dipping sause. They were superb, and out of this world. Then we got some more Italian goodness with some Calimari and their Arancini. To top it off, we ordered our 3 year Pizza Bianca!

The prices are exactly what to expect for a business on the Downtown Mall. Sal's has been there for years, and I didn't expect them to undercut their quality of service and foods!

I have experienced slower than usual service here before, but that is when every table is filled with hungry people. It happens, it's not a large chain with numerous chefs and ovens, they are a mom & pop shop with delicious hand made Italian food. We have and always will come to this place, it just like wine, it gets better with age!
