“Tucked away in a remote section of campus”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2013

Smallish but comfortable rooms, clean and quiet except for the ubiquitous standard-issue hotel room air conditioner. It's a little confusing figuring out how to get around the property and to the parking lot, by about Day 2 you should have it all figured out.
The University Transit Service bus stop is at the top of the hill - about a block away. BUT - word of warning - on football game days bus service is suspended approximately 2 hours before game time. We found this out the hard way - as the hotel staff directed a number of us up to the bus stop and we waited in vain until finally giving up. It's about a 40 minute walk to Scott Stadium, so plan accordingly! Might be a good option for basketball though, it's a much shorter walk to JPJ arena.

Room Tip: Only one elevator, it's pretty quiet so might want to consider a room close to the elevator.

Thank you for your review. We do apologize for the misinformation you were given regarding the University Transit Service operation hours on game day. We do have many guests who stay with us on UVA home football games as they can walk approximately 2 miles to Scott Stadium and not have to find parking. We look forward to seeing you on future visit to Charlottesville.

New to the UVA family, we needed a hotel for parents weekend and found most places booked. We were happy to stumble on this hotel and even happier with its clean rooms and friendly staff. If you have your heart set on big chain hotel contemporary furnishings and frills, look elsewhere. But for a comfortable, quiet stay close the UVA grounds for a reasonable price, keep this hotel in mind!

I almost don't want to review Inn at Darden because I am scared I'll not be able to get a room anymore if word really gets out amongst parents and alum. The hotel is, let's face it, just so-so as hotels go. It is "like staying at the Omni", someone else wrote, only without the pool, and that's about right. However, here's the thing...if you have a kid at school at UVA, especially living on-campus and they have a little brother or sister, you cannot beat this place. We go down once or twice a year with our 8 year-old to visit with her big sis, and this place is perfect for that. It has a nice game room that the younger one is nuts for, and pretty much all day you can grab an apple or muffin or coke or something from the lobby. The staff is down to earth and it feels like you are being checked in by your own grandma or nephew, they are just very low-key and pleasant and helpful. The rooms are spartan-ish in that UVA sort of fashion... if they were Jeffersonian columns they'd be just pilasters, but they're fine. If you are looking for alcohol and a little scene for an hour, the little bar/lounge is actually buzzing on Fridays and Saturdays during school sessions, and half the crowd look to be professors, not just Darden and Law or JAG students. Don't expect the total commercial hotel experience, but if you are a Hoo and need to put up the little family for a visit with one of your own, this is it. When everywhere else is booked, Darden may still have a room, although that probably won't last long. Parking can be less than entirely convenient, but it's no big deal when you consider you are spending $50 less than the Marriott and you are basically on-campus. It's like going to NYC...you park the car and then walk or take the UVA bus line for the weekend, no worries and totally free. My older one lives at Copeley so this is just unbeatable. Walk to Barracks Road Shopping, take the Blue bus to Central Grounds if you aren't up for the stroll. If your UVA student has a younger brother or sister and you are heading to the hook for a weekend, this is a good deal and you get the UVA flavor 24/7.

Room Tip: Stay upstairs, get as close to the Darden main building as you can... up the hill.

I just happened across The Inn at Darden when looking for a place to stay close to John Paul Jones arena. It is a little difficult to realize you're there...no sign. If you see "The Gatehouse" sign, you've found it! There is a parking deck available (not free), but free parking is available if you can manage to find a spot in the circle. The hallways are a little confusing to say the least and the room was a little small, but nice overall. I would definitely stay here again. It is within walking distance to the arena and other UVA venues and a small shopping center.

We are within easy walking distance to the John Paul Jones Arena which makes our hotel a convenient place to stay when coming to an event there. all of our guests have complimentary parking while staying with us, I do apologize for any confusion with parking. Being a University of Virginia property, we are required to follow the signage guidelines of the University. We are in the process of obtaining new signage for our property that will better direct incoming guests. We look forward to your next stay with us.

The Inn at Darden is a rarely mentioned but perfectly suitable place to stay in Charlottesville. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable (on par with the Omni). We stayed at the Inn during a football weekend and everything was either sold out or in excess of $200 a night and the Inn at Darden was only $160 a night. The location may not be ideal if you are comparing it to places on or near the downtown mall or the corner but compared to all of the hotels up Route 29 that are more expensive and not as nice as the Inn at Darden, this place is extremely well situated. The only complaint I have is that when I arrived, my reservation was not in the system even though I booked online months in advance. Luckily they had rooms available so it was not an issue. I would highly recommend staying here and saving a little money compared to comparable hotels in Charlottesville.

Great hotel experience, we liked staying on campus and ended up at the Rotunda for a tour! Wish there was a pool. The breakfast was pretty good! I think it won't be long before the secret is out about this place

Based on reviews we booked for here for our one night in Charlottesville. When we arrived at 11:30 pm after a long drive, we could not find the sign for "The Inn at Darden." There is none. After driving in circles on the Darden Business School Campus we finally spotted a small sign for "The Gatehouse" where you check in. Wish this had been mentioned when we made the reservation. We were in no mood for a frustrating search late at night.

The inconvenience got worse when we got our room key and convoluted verbal instructions as to where to park (no where close to our room) and how to get to our room (prepare for the labyrinth). Go in that building, go down one hall, take an elevator, get off the elevator, go down another hall, go through a set of doors, take a left down another hall etc. etc. We felt like we were on a treasure hunt as we walked by endless (apparently empty) rooms and down countless corridors.

The room? On par with an average Holiday In - mediocre furnishings and thin walls. Hey, but you get free snacks at "The Gatehouse." Why bother staying here? There are better options in Charlottesville.
