Description: An intimate, lively neighborhood restaurant located in the charming Belmont district of Charlottesville, VA, tavola offers inspired rustic Italian dining through the use of quality ingredients and a simple philosophy fostered by a staff passionate about food, wine, craft cocktails and personal service. Due to our limited seating, we do not take reservations outside of special events.

The restaurant is small, maybe 10 tables, and the kitchen is open all which allow for an interesting immersion experience. Everytime a meal is completed the entire restaurant is treated to different array of wonderful and delicious smells. That being said, some may find the small open setting loud, smoky and distracting. The menu is defined by basic sounding meals, but all very well prepared and very tasty. The prices for meals wines were very reasonable.

Being and eating at tavola ( yes, small "t" ) is very pleasurable.

It's a kind of success just to get in the place, as it is small and takes no reservations, and fills up quickly.

tavola is a trendy restaurant in a trendy part of the restaurant-trendy City of Charlottesville. In a cluster of eateries in the previously working-class Belmont neighborhood, tavola is the "Italian" one. But the dishes are as much nouvelle as traditional Italian, and the charm is in occupying a table in the small, almost crowded space as a busy staff prepares your selections in an active and open kitchen taking up much of the room.

Each item is good but each item is ordered and priced separately and it adds up. ( Salad is an item, olives are an item, bread is an item...)

The service is reliable.

Portions are small but delicious.

Wines are well-selected and reasonably priced.

Dessert offerings are limited, tasty and expensive.

tavola trades on its cache and ambience as much as its food and it seems always well-attended because of that.

My husband and I have been to Tavola twice, and it's worked its way to the top of our list of local restaurants. Flanked by the Local and down the street from Mas, Tavola is hard to get into because it is small (maybe 12 tables). But, if you can get in, you will not be disappointed!! (And if you can't, there are other good options in the neighborhood.) We have yet to find a dish that was anything but delicious, and we've enjoyed the wait staff and bar tender. The atmosphere is great, and the aromas coming from the kitchen should be bottled up and sold separately. In spite of the potential wait, we will definitely keep coming back to Tavola again and again.

First timers to La Travola, knew it would be noisy so was not put off by that. The cuisine was excellent! Loved every taste. But, we will not be back, although the service was adequate, we felt unwelcome and intrusive. The waiter was bored and distant, the atmosphere was almost zombie like. A good restaurant is more than just food, it is atmosphere and and warmth. Maybe they will move and hire some experienced, pleasant staff with a modicum of personality,I can only hope.

One of the challenges of travel is to find the restaurant that is not the "tourist spot". Charlottesville has more than its share. We feel fortunate to have discovered Tavola as it fits our criteria when we are looking for a place to eat: carefully & imaginatively prepared small menu with daily specials based on best available ingredients (preferrably on a blackboard); limited seating with good service allowing the kitchen to devote the proper attention each dish; simple functional but attractive ambiance; local customers; and attentive but not intrusive service. We have been to Tavola on two separate visits to Charlottesville. We were pleased on both occasions with our meals. The only reservation we might have is the pricing of the wines by the glass. Otherwise we highly recommend Tavola.
