Cavalier Inn at the University of Virginia

During the course of my weekend stay, I was transferred to three rooms, all of which were covered in hair (in the towels, on the linens, and on the floors/counters). When I brought this to the attention of the front desk representative, she told me I could come pick up some clean towels and linens to change the sheets myself. It took speaking with her supervisor (who - for the record - was insanely apologetic and truly attempted to accommodate me in every way possible) to be placed in another room....which still had hair on the bed sheets. I have to stress that the office manager was incredibly professional and did her best to keep me happy. However, her best efforts cannot overcome the fact that the place is filthy and the staff is sub par. I won't bother describing the cleaning staff, but let's just say they were incredibly unprofessional and borderline harassing. FIND ANOTHER HOTEL!!

Room Tip: My tip to choosing a good room: book it at another hotel.

This hotel is within walking distance to the main University building. I arrived to the hotel on one of the coldest days and there were forecasts of the snow. Chaunte, the hotel receptionist, made sure that my room was warm and was really extremely professional and friendly during the check-in. The service was on par or even better than some 5 star hotels that I have stayed. The room was clean and provided everything that I needed. Recommend!

Stayed overnight to be able to drop off my daughter at the train. Definitely close to all that is Charlottesville. Room was OK. A little small but it had a refrig. and microwave. The beds were comfortable and the TV was good. Don't know why hotels only have handicapped rooms with one bed but we couldn't get a room with two beds and a handicapped bedroom so that was frustrating but typical. Got a great deal thru expedia for $67 a night so that made the little issues seem easier to take. The breakfast was good and included. Mostly fake food...bacon, eggs and such, but hot. I'd stay there again especially if I could get a deal. One thing, they turn off the AC in the winter and it gets hot in the room even with the heat off. I'll bring a fan with me the next time.

Dear Ricki M from Salem Virginia,

Thank you for taking the time out to write a review, we appreciate all the comments and suggestion that we receive from guests, they let us know what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong, and how we can improve, all of our breakfast foods are fresh, and come from a local vendor, it is a challenge sometimes to keep it from drying out even when you use steamers that we use, unfortunately some times buffet bars get like that. but thank you for the comments and we will try something else. Thank you again for your comments, we wish you the best in your future travels.

This is a decent budget hotel close to many of the sporting venues for the University of Virginia. It is also very close to the main campus. Just a few minutes walk to the basketball arena and probably a little less than a 15 min walk to the football stadium.

We arrived a little after Noon (which is much earlier than recommended check in times), but no clean rooms were available. We took a lovely walk through the main campus and returned sometime after 3 pm. It took a little while to find a room, as they had been full the night before and the cleaning staff had not been able to finish. But, we got our room easily enough with a little patience (far more patience than some of the folks waiting to check in for a mere 15 minutes). The staff was courteous and diligent in the face of some unwarranted ire from a couple that had just arrived.

The room (King bed) was small, but contained a chair, desk, flat screen TV, microwave/fridge, and the bed. The room was a bit hot, despite it being midwinter and the AC was difficult to work with and not terribly effective. The microwave/fridge didn't get all that cold, but did the job. I also had trouble with the TV remote, but since I wasn't terribly interested in it I did not pursue what was likely just a battery issue. Aside from those minor complaints the room was clean.

The breakfast was expansive with eggs, sausage, biscuits, gravy, fruit and cottage cheese, waffle makers, cereal and a variety of pastries. A really nice spread for a relatively budget conscious hotel choice.

When we checked the person at the front desk didn't know how to create/code the key to our room and we had to wait until she could go a get someone who could.

The first room we were assigned smelled like a heavy smoker had been a previous guest. The cleaning staff walking down the hall mentioned she thought the room smelled bad when she had cleaned the room and offer the use of the air freshener on her cart.

We asked for and received and second room. The smell was not much better than the first. Given this was a one night stay, we sucked it up and didn't not to asked for another room again.

The heating/cooling system didn't work well -- we couldn't get the temperature below 76 degrees and the fan when on, made a horrible noise making it difficult to sleep.

Next morning, our eyes we all bloodshot -- we assume from the smoke

When leaving in the morning, one of elevators was broken. When the 2nd and only other elevator arrived on our floor, it was filled with cleaning carts and the staff member made no attempt to make room for us or give us any helpful solutions/options. We walked down the stairs to the lobby with all of our luggage.

At check out, staff failed to ask us if we enjoyed our stay our had any problems. We left as fast as possible and made a promise to ourselves to never stay here again.

A two night stay with our two small dogs was convenient, comfortable and clean.
Staff was very accommodating and friendly. Although it is an older property , we were pleased with amenities. The complimentary breakfast, fridge in rooms and fitness center made our stay enjoyable.

What a lovely change from cookie cutter chains. This inn looks rather dismal from the outside, so don,t be mislead by its exterior. This charming inn shows the effects of remodeling yet retains the charm that eludes the the standard and predictable others. We booked a room on orbitz for $63 per night. This included breakfast which was lovely, free parking and free wifi
what more can you ask for. Not the ritz, but delightful , clean comfortable and a bargain
