“Nice hotel, would stay again!”
Reviewed July 26, 2011

We stayed at the Cavalier Inn overnight on our way down to the Outer Banks and were going to see Monticello on the way. I picked it for it's location (about 5 miles from Monticello and right on the grounds of the University of Virginia) and the price was right. The rooms were nice, well decorated, beds weren't TOO firm (like 99% of most places!). They have a nice pool too. The free breakfast was fine, the usual offerings plus make your own waffles. The seating area was large and pleasant. All in all no complaints! I would like to visit Charlottesville again someday, it looked like a very interesting town.

Room Tip: I got the best price booking through the hotel's website.

Stayed at the hotel for a sports camp. This was the hotel that the camp selected.
I knew when we arrived and saw how rusted the balconies and cracked cement at the entry that we were in trouble. The lobby looked new and bright. Our room was not ready, we had to wait an hour.
Got in the room what a major disappointment!. It was dark, not airy like the lobby. The website for the hotel touts renovated, but what I could see was new bedding (much too soft) and threw paint on the walls. The ceiling tiles looked old. The bathroom area still had the old faux marble in the sink area and the bathroom was old and dingy and smelled slightly of urine. We were in room 225 which had a serious gnat problem not to mention a few other bugs we found.
The floor by bed frame needed to be vacuumed a lot of debris and dust. I found that the bathroom shower had some hair on the wall from a previous occupant. The air conditioning unit was malfunctioning someone came to fix that issue.
Behind the door shoddy work was evident as the old wallpaper was still up.
The breakfast was nothing to write home about (glad Panera was close by).
This hotel was packed! I believe solely because it is adjacent to UVA. Hard to believe that this is owned by the University Foundation.
I would agree with the other reviewer that stated this hotel had a cosmetic makeover. This place is not worth the money charged.
Only good thing? WIFI

Thank you for your review, It is always disappointing to see when a guest is unhappy, During our recent renovations, the lobby was completed, In all guest rooms, they received a new lighting package, new, custom artwork, new 37" flat screen TV's, new electronic safes, new carpeting, new wall vinyl, new drapes with custom made valances, the mirrors in the bedroom area and in the bath vanity are also new along with the bathroom and vanity lights. Our bathrooms are set to be renovated in our next slow season coming up. Our breakfast has several items, maybe you did not see them, we offer on a daily basis a waffle station to make your own Belgian waffles, we also offer scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, along with the standard items of assorted bagels, muffins, danish, doughnuts, we have cold cereal and oatmeal along with whole fruit and assorted yogurt, and boiled eggs, with three juices to choose from. Once the second phase of the renovations is completed and the bath rooms and vanities are replaced we hope that you will come back and see the hotel when all of the renovations are done. Again, thank you for your review.

We travel a lot as a family. We have small kids and welcome extra conveniences such as free breakfasts and free web access. This hotel had both. Web could be a bit slow at times. The rooms are basic and very "motel" like--clean, adequate accomodations. Sinks are not private and can cause a stir if others are sleeping. Most of the breakfast is not all that good--bread slightly dry, drink machine with sour juice, fruit mushy and horrid refrigerated and stale doughnuts. Coffee was good, toasted bagels good, cereal good and make-your-own waffles VERY good. So, one can make do. Front desk was moderately friendly yet aloof. Breakfast staff and housekeeping friendly and helpful. Traffic outside bothersome in morning, so bring your earplugs.

Room Tip: Rooms looking over pool better...

I do want to start by saying that the staff at front desk was nice...but that's where all good stops. I should have paid attention to other reviews....I thought because it was listed on the UVa website it would be a good hotel...no! This is an old fashioned motel...the rooms are off an outside hallway. When we checked in, a large group was hanging off a balcony smoking. We sat in car and debated about just turning around. It was the kind of group I wasn't comfortable having my 17 yr. old daughter walk around. The bathroom was just gross. Luckily we checked in late afternoon and had our college tour the next morning. We actually got up early and drove to the bagel store and walked around campus to get away from hotel! This place needs more than a revamping...it needs a tear down! Again...I'm not faulting anyone at front desk...they were super nice. And we did not even THINK about looking at breakfast there!

Thank you for your review, we appreciate when guests take the time to let us know about their stay. We were sad to see that you felt like the hotel was not up to your standards, being so close to the university we get a wide variety of student guests and student groups that come to visit the university. Since all of our rooms are non-smoking, the few guest that do smoke will use the balcony side of our hotel instead of smoking in our non-smoking rooms. We do have a lot of new parents and prospective students that stay with us and feel very safe in the hotel. Having a mid-rise hotel where all of our rooms can only be accessed from our front desk lobby area and with one side of the hotel that is an open balcony area and the other side being interior fully enclosed with glass can be confusing to some guests. Also, I would like to mention that the next stage of our renovations we will be updating the bathroom fixtures. Again we appreciate your time in letting us know your opinion with regards to your stay and hope that you may consider us in the future.

Thank you

Yes, this was obviously originally a Holiday Inn or something, with the rooms all facing the outdoors. But they have glassed in the front side on the street, and the back side (where my room was) faces the parking lot and is pretty quiet. The room itself was kept clean and neat. There is a little fridge and a widescreen TV with a full channel lineup. Another legacy of its original life was that the sink and counter are outside the small room where the toilet and shower are. This can be good when two people are involved, so I don't mind it. The website mentions "laundry", so I assumed there was a laundry room on site, but that is incorrect. I guess they'll send it out for you (!) That's something they should change; even the Red Roof Inn up the road has a laundry room. The breakfast bar had possibilities but needs some improvements, but it's adequate. In short, don't expect a high-end experience, but for the money it was just fine.

First off, the beds and pillows here were very very comfortable and the bedding was sparkling clean, so if that's all you care about, certainly stay here if you are going to the Univ of VA for a college tour. We were allowed to leave our car in the garage for the day after our night there, and it was a quick walk to campus. We didn't use the pool but it was pretty and appeared to be perfectly clean and taken care of.

However, if you care about decor, you are not in for a treat. The rooms could use a good renovation, starting with the wallpaper and ceiling tiles. Gross! Dirty, stained. The bathroom fan was crusted with dust. The sink must have been put in years ago - it was very low and made me realize that sinks these days are mush higher.

Breakfast was the next problem. A small buffet of mostly boxed danish and donuts (nothing freshly made or bought), fake fruit, (well, it looked good if you didn't want any), and yogurts. They also had make your own waffles. The front of the juice machine was held on with tape. When we arrived, it looked like the entire US Army had just gone through! What a mess! Crumbs, spilled milk (even in the little refrigerator where the pitchers sat), cereal, food, waffle batter all over all the counter surfaces. There were a bunch of broken danishes in the serving cabinet. To be fair, the dining area, which was very pretty and looked new, was almost full, but most of the people left and it took a good 10 minutes for the attendant to show his face and he did a haphazard job of cleaning up. We didn't see him for most of the breakfast and the place needed a lot of attention.

We felt safe and the room and bathroom were clean, but we would try another place if we go back. I'm sure there are better options. If you do go, use the coupon in the travel bookelts you can get while travelling. At least the price was excellent.

Hello

We appreciate you taking time to write a review, as part of our recent renovations we tried to keep the University feel to our rooms since we are located on the campus grounds, the second phase will be the bathroom area, your reveiw and reviews like this helps us make decisions when it comes to room layout and what we put back into our rooms over the course of renovating it. I hope if you return you will give us another chance so that you can see all the improvements that we are still in the progress of making.

Despite its much-touted "recent renovation," the Cavalier Inn remains basically a multi-storey motel. It sits on the intersection of two busy streets, for one thing, and you can walk into the rooms off the street. Besides, "renovation" is not really the right word. More like a cosmetic make-over. The carpets are new and the walls have been repainted. But the bath, toilet and plumbing are old and manky. A bit of new sealing and a bath mat does not hide the fact that the place is old and rather tired. I was unlucky to have a room near the Ivy Street end: it was so noisy, all through the night I expected screaming fire trucks to come crashing into the room.
In all fairness, the staff was very friendly and helpful. No problems there. They deserves a better facility to work in.

Room Tip: Some rooms very noisy.
