I have taken this tour many times over the years. Unfortunately the tour has become a heavily politically biased presentation. While we all agree that slavery was horrible, about 75% of the tour is centered on that subject and little regarding Jefferson’s accomplishments. I had the opportunity to hear several tour presenters speak and there was both a complete lack of consistency as well as varying levels of disrespect. One gentlemen started off his tour with attacking Jefferson’s reputation as an “inventor” and said he copied the ideas of others. One insisted Jefferson did really like the idea of the constitution as drafted and he preferred it to have expired in less than two decades after ratification. Another made a heavy effort to present Jefferson as a mean hateful slave owner that mistreated them (with no documentation cited).
I could write a long narrative regarding the counter points presented in the tours however this is not the proper forum. I’ll just repeat that slavery was horrific. It must be considered in the circumstance at the time to understand what the founders were dealing with in trying to form the first representative republic in a world of kings and dictators. History documents the majority of founders despised slavery. A balanced presentation would consider a broader consideration of the circumstances of the time.
I would avoid taking my children and exposing them to this biased, factually lacking and inconsistent presentation.More
