Out of all of the historic houses I've seen, Monticello was amazing both inside and out! Set on a mountain overlooking University of Virginia, this "little mountain" provides gorgeous views of Charlottesville. The gardens outside were absolutely beautiful in the winter, even. The house tour was great too. About 2 hours long, the knowledgeable guide walked us through each room. She seemed to know a lot and hold a lot of interest in the house and the lives of the Jefferson family, which made the tour more interesting. We also took the "behind the scenes" tour which wasn't as great. She took us to unfinished rooms which had nothing in them. I'd skip that if I ever went back. Most of the items in the house were original. MUST SEE!!!

This is a must-see for garden lovers and history buffs. The grounds are immaculate and there are so many varieties of flowers, plants and trees. We had a wonderful tour guide who provided information on everything in the flower and vegetable garden. It was beautiful. We then took the tour through Jefferson's home. The tour guide was so animated, one would think she knew Jefferson personally; however, she was extremely detailed and provided information that painted a picture of the time and brought everything in the home to life. It was a wonderful history lesson.

We went to Monticello the week following Christmas and were impressed with the beauty of the site even in the winter months! The visitor center is very well done. The staff and tour guides were friendly, and we loved having the opportunity to walk at our leisure down the mountain. Very informative. Highly recommended and well done. Also visited Montpellier and Mount Vernon this was myy favorite tour of the three...

We visited Monticello and other cites in Charlottesville, VA for a quick getaway before our kids (ages 10 and 12) went back to school last year. We were pleasantly surprised at how much our kids enjoyed the tour of Monticello. The tour was well-done and fun for kids. We also visited James and Dolly Madison's plantation in the area, and the University of Virginia campus which houses some additional beautiful architecture of Thomas Jefferson. The trip ended up being one of the best 3-day excursions we've ever taken as a family. Lots to do and see in Charlottesville; although Monticello was tops, the other places we visited were really great too.
