We visited Monticello and other cites in Charlottesville, VA for a quick getaway before our kids (ages 10 and 12) went back to school last year. We were pleasantly surprised at how much our kids enjoyed the tour of Monticello. The tour was well-done and fun for kids. We also visited James and Dolly Madison's plantation in the area, and the University of Virginia campus which houses some additional beautiful architecture of Thomas Jefferson. The trip ended up being one of the best 3-day excursions we've ever taken as a family. Lots to do and see in Charlottesville; although Monticello was tops, the other places we visited were really great too.

My advice would be to buy tickets ahaead of time so that you can guarantee a tour. But if you do not do that you usually can get a tour the day o but you may have to wait a while. On our last tour we bought our tour and then went to have lunch at Michie Tavern while waiting for our tour time. The home is very well preserved and the views are amazing. The guides are knowledgeable. It is always a great tour.

We were astounded by the beauty of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello! The staff and tour guides were amazingly friendly, and we loved having the opportunity to take a shuttle up and down the mountain! The museum and the mansion were both very informative, and the food at the cafeteria was yummy.
We enjoyed touring the home and gardens at a normal pace. Other presidential homes do not accommodate you as nicely. We purchased items from both the gift shop on the mountain and from the visitors center gift shop. We liked the numerous other tours that the site has to offer such as a tour of the breathtaking gardens.
We would recommend Monticello to any history buff, or to any traveler who likes beautiful scenery!

Loved this stop! Tour of the house and walking back to visitor center takes approx 2 hours. Look around the rooms while touring the house! Too many people just stood looking at the docent. I saw amazing details while roaming around each room, in the wookwork, window frames, and book titles.

It's well worth it to visit Monticello, and if you're a history buff, it's worth a 150 mile detour to see. I imagine in the summer when the gardens are in full flower, it's even better.
