This is a hidden gem in VA. A little off the tourist circle (Mt Vernon, the monuments) highly recommend you take the drive there!

Tours around the grounds are very nice as well

Thank Mike K

You learn a ton about Thomas Jefferson and it's amazing that all the brick and most of the doors, flooring etc is the original! Beautiful scenery. Definitely go.

The grounds of Monticello are beautiful. One could spend extra time simply enjoying the outdoors (if the weather permits, of course). The tour of the inside of the house was perfect for us...plenty of detail but not too much! A shuttle takes tourists from the visitor's center to the house...the wait for a shuttle was not long at all. Of course, we were there on a weekday in October.

Make sure you purchase your tour tickets ahead of time and get there early. Tours are crowded, but if you love American history you are going to love this tour. Was a little difficult with a one year old but we managed. Got great photos of the grounds and gardens.

The location is well signposted and about 10 minutes out of town. It has good facilities, is well organised although I would definitely book online and in advance. People were being turned away on Columbus weekend. The gardens and buildings are well maintained and the guided tour of the house was informative.
It was a shame that the slaves' quarters had been knocked down. It would have added another dimension to the visit.
