“Refurbished Rooms, Old Virginia Charm - We'll Be Back!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2012

We are regulars who have visited the BHI many times. My husband and I returned to the resort this past weekend, our first visit of the year, and have already booked our next visit. The refurbished rooms are wonderful! The new decor makes them seem light, airy, and even more spacious than they were before. It is amazing how they made those small bathrooms feel larger by turning the bathroom floorplan sideways, installing a large shower, and moving the access door. The beds are still comfortable and the room seating is enhanced by a bench at the foot of the bed. I used both the outdoor lap and the adult pools, and had a chance to take a shower in the Sports Club. What a nice facility! We found the grounds of the property especially tidy: just love those huge trees! The Bistro was great for a burger and beer on Friday night, after a long travel day.

Not everything was perfect so I'd give the BHI a 4.5-star rating (if I could) instead of 5 stars: the light bulbs in the room were hard to read by; there was already a large stain on the carepet beside the bed; room service was swamped on Saturday morning, so we had to call the front desk and wait a bit for our breakfast to arrive at the room. When it did, it was delicious, as usual. The flat-screen TV in the room was a welcomed change, but they might have upgraded to a bit of a larger size. We were glad they kept the 4-cup, in-room coffee pots, but the in-room tiny refrig had seen better days. Maybe some replacements for them are in order.

Overall, however, we totally enjoyed our stay! The afternoon teas and Sunday breakfast buffet were excellent, as usual, and we loved walking around the little pond each evening. So glad to see that an 'old friend' has finally gained a new look! We look forward to our next visit at the BHI !

My family stayed at the Boar's Head this past weekend while we cleaned out parents' home in Charlottesville. It was one of the nicest properties I have ever stayed at anywhere in the world ... just delightful and well worth the extra price vs. a regular hotel. Have eaten there before but never had a reason to stay since our folks lived there. But I would go back to Charlottesville again just to enjoy the property ... for a special occasion or just a long weekend. Outstanding!

Room Tip: I'm sure all rooms are fine ... We were in Edman Hall which is close to the Sports Club, and we...

If you want to see Jefferson's Monticello, this is the place to stay. It is charming, with luxurious linens, and excellent service from front desk, room service and housekeeping. The rooms with views of the lake are definitely the place to stay. We didn't get a chance to use the golf course or the sports or spa facilities, but did get to take a walk around the lovely grounds.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the lake.

We stayed at the Boar's Head for a long, summer weekend. I had an initial problem with the room assigned ( 100 units ) as it had no view and was quite dark. I have stayed at the property over 50 times and knew where I wanted to be and the front desk was quite willing to reassign our room. We had a beautiful view of the lake with a porch to sit on but 100+ degree temperatures prevented any use of the porch. The staff were very helpful as we did a tour on the Monticello Wine Tour and they recommended some great vineyards. Overall the staff was helpful and first class in all aspects. The Sport's Club Pool was wonderful and was the only relief we could get from the heat. The only negative was the service at breakfast. We did not do the buffet the first day and it took 20 minutes to get coffee and a bagel. The buffet the next day solved that problem. The Boar's Head has set the standard for class in Charlottesville for many years and we will return in the fall for football game weekends.

Room Tip: Ask to stay with a view of the pond. The older 100 level rooms are quite dark and the 600 and 700 b...

We stayed at The Boar's Head Inn to celebrate our 40th anniversary- we had spent part of our honeymoon there. It was nicer this year than it was in 1972. It was purchased by University of VA in 1989 so there are plenty items, quotes and other Jeffersonian memorabilia to enjoy. The wait staff called us by name at dinner, they brought us an appetizer to our room before dinner and acknowedged the anniversary with dessert and a champagne flute each. The room had a private patio, the bathroom was huge and well-appointedand the bed was comfortable. It was wonderful stay. They serve a buffete breakfast each morning as a bonus.

My husband and I decided to take a last minute trip out of town - we live just outside of Richmond - and after a few hours of research and calling for availabilities at hotels and B&Bs from Roanoke to DC, we settled on Boar's Head. It turned out to be exactly what we were looking for. Location was just far enough from Richmond to be "out of town" but close enough to be able to leave right after work on Thursday to make it there for dinner. I made reservations just two hours before we got there. From the minute we checked in until check out we were treated very well. Everyone seemed to go out of their way to give us service with a smile. The buildings were recently renovated, so any negative reviews of the physical state of the hotel must have been done prior to the renovation, so you can ignore those. Everything was pretty much brand new in our room. Housekeeping was prompt and efficient. When we made a special request for something in our room, it was quickly done, and they even called a little bit later to check to see if it was to our liking. The bed was high quality and extremely comfortable.
The service in both restaurants in the hotel was outstanding. They were attentive and friendly. The food was delicious and well deserving of the reputation. We didn't have to wait at all for a table for any of the five meals we had there (2 breakfasts, 3 dinners) though we made reservations for dinner Friday night just in case. The only negative experience we had during our four day stay at the Boar's Head was the obnoxiously loud group dining at the Bistro who apparently sat there for almost three hours taking up valuable dining space. They were so loud we actually left and came back after they were gone. Apparently even people with money can have no concept of propriety or decorum! Of course there is not much the hotel could do about them but the staff was very understanding when we got up and left.
We worked out at the sports club each day and used both the club and the Inn's pools. The equipment at the club was extensive, everything from all the standard cardio machines and free weights to TRX trainers and Pilates machines. Again the staff was extremely accommodating and welcoming, and available for questions. We certainly appreciated the adults only pool. Now be warned - such great service and accommodations do come with a high price, but it was well worth it. We definitely plan on returning soon!

Room Tip: We were in the main building (200s) which was a good location but not much for a view. Buildings 60...

They sure got the room renovation right this past year. They combine elegance with history to create a charm seldom found in guest rooms. The sports club and two restaurants provide a nice compliment to the guest experience.

We were there for two days most recently and the staff was well mannered, friendly and attentive.
