“Great Little Inn Central to Downtown Charlottesville”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

I stayed at 200 South Street Inn for one night while touring the local Charlottesville attractions. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The Inn is within walking distance to downtown Charlottesville and many restaurants, bars, and shops. They offered a good breakfast with local breads, jams, and jellies and a great evening reception with complimentary wine and local cheese. Oh, and cookies are offered around the clock! Yummy!

My only complaint, which is actually a big complaint, is that the Inn is located near railroad tracks. Okay, VERY close to railroad tracks. The first time I heard the train was probably around 1:00 am, and I literally thought a helicopter was landing on the building! It scared me to death!!! Our room was on the ground floor. Maybe rooms on higher floors don't experience such an errrrrr... disturbance.

All in all, we had a great stay, and I would probably stay here again - just on a higher floor.

This is a lovely old historic inn which lends itself to a Virginian countryside homestead rather than in the centre of a large urban town. Rocking chairs on the verandah and pastel colours give it a quaint feel. The rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable though the bathroom would benefit from some TLC and a little upgrading. Plus points are its location to the nearby restaurants of downtown Charlottesville, its old world charm, the pleasant breakfast, the free wine and cheese late afternoon and the on-site parking. Negatives include the bathroom decor, the noise of the train at night (not too bothersome once paper was stuffed into the frames of the sash windows to stop them rattling when the train rumbled past at 4am), and whilst the staff were pleasant enough we didn't feel they were overly friendly. However, if you want to stay somewhere different and experience a place with 19th century heritage then this Inn delivers.

Lovely weekend in Charlottesville. Great downtown location and breakfasts were fresh and very nice. A great historic old inn. The recommendation for the restaurant across the street (Bang!) was excellent and staff helped us get a cab to get around. The television was a bit disappointing, though i probably wouldn't even have noticed if it weren't for the Olympics.

The inn is a large charming brick building two short blocks away from the pedestrian area in the heart of Charlottesville's downtown. Room 8 was a stylishly decorated high-ceilinged room, featuring a comfortable canopy bed, spacious bath, and beautiful rugs. The inn offers a wine and cheese hour, homebaked cookies and fruit at any hour, and a continental breakfast including yogurts, homemade breads, and granola. Our only caveat was that the bathroom had loose tiles on the steps to the whirlpool tub, requiring us to be careful stepping into and out of the bath.

Room Tip: Room 8 was pretty and romantic.

Last weekend my husband and I and our good friends were in Charlottesville for the Old Crow Medicine Show concert. My goal was for the weekend to be a car free experience full of good friends, good food, good beer. Charlottesville delivered, but the inn was somewhat of a disappointment.

The South Street Inn's greatest assets are its proximity to the downtown district, nTelos Pavillion, and South Street Brewery, the homemade cookies at the reception desk, the wine and cheese reception each evening, and the better than continental breakfast. These are very nice extras that compensated for the other inadequacies we encountered.

In other reviews, many people complained about the train. While it is quite close, it is not obtrusive. I was more concerned with the rundown appearance of the outside seating areas as well as the shabby condition of room 14. Lastly, on busy days, the parking is insufficient.

My daughter and I were guests at the Inn last week on a swing through Virginia while touring historical sights. It is in a great location and very convenient to the downtown area as well as the UVA campus, Jefferson's Monticello and Madison's Montpelier. Our room was lovely, and well appointed, our bed very comfortable. Our room was very private and we did not hear much noise from our fellow guests. The staff was beyond friendly and helpful. They had wonderful information to share about the area, and were honest in their recommendations about local restaurants and tours. We had a delicious breakfast with many home baked items, fresh squeezed juice, and most importantly, great coffee.

We stayed here on a Tuesday night in the month of July. Reservations were easy to make, and our welcome was cordial and friendly. They upgraded us to a larger room even though we had not requested it, which was very gracious. Our room was lovely- comfortable bed, spacious bath, outlets easily found, technology clear and well-explained. Out host asked if we needed dinner recommendations (we didn't, as we had lived near C'ville for a few years), and reminded us of the home made cookies available any time we wished. Breakfast was set out early, which was great, and it was very enjoyable. Lots of good, fresh fruit, toast, bagels, juice. We very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend 200 South Street to anyone without hesitation.
