“Est 1872 Good Lunch”
Reviewed April 29, 2012

Frieda provided great service as we had wonderful lobster bisque, pulled pork sandwiches, crab cakes and black bean soup. This is a very reasonably priced place to eat. It is situated near the Berkley and Shirley Plantations. Both mUst sees in Va. One is where the first Thanksving Day was celebrated and the other is the childhood home of Robert E Lee.

“Serendipitous detour and stop.”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

After a long-weekend in spent Williamsburg area headed out of town along the James River road and decided to see what the Charles City Courthouse looked like and discovered Cul's CourtHouse Grill across the street from the historic old courthouse building. The owner was present and very open to talking about his restaurant and the building which is an old country store that had been sitting closed up for about fifty years until the owner decided it would make a good restaurant location. I had the grilled cathouse sandwich which came dressed with an apple horseradish relish with a side of homemade potato chips. The chips were delicious. The sandwich was great. The owner and staff were friendly, informative and helpful. For another group of lunchtime customers the owner called the operator of Berkeley Plantation to verify the hours, price and the time of the next guided tour of the house and grounds. Apparently the operators of plantation homes open for tours for ten to fifteen miles either side of Charles City Courthouse are frequent or sometimes customers at the restaurant and stay on good terms so as to share information that is handy or useful to tourists driving on the James River Road. This place, with the friendly staff, courteous and helpful owner, and good food is a gem that is worth a stop. I did not try the deserts, but the next table over did and were very enthusiastic and positive about what they were having.

“Worth a stop.”
Reviewed March 27, 2012

The Grille is housed in a quaint little building that was once a general store.

We started with butter bean humus and fried green tomatoes. The humus was tasty but lacked flavoring. It was however served with plenty of pita bread, fresh cucumber slices and tomatoes.

The fried green tomatoes were cooked in a corn meal breading and served with a spicy sweet n sour marmalade. It was quite good.

I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It was served with homemade potato chips. I know there are arguments about how BBQ should be prepared, but their BBQ was cooked in a spicy vinegar sauce. Hot sauce was available, but I declined.

If you find yourself in or around Charles City, stop in for a bite.

We were visiting Piney Grove B&B and the owners recommended this place which we enjoyed immensly. It was great as you could have a sandwich or a complete dinner. The setting in an old country store was fantacstic.
