Named one of the region's Best New Restaurants by Northern Virginia Magazine, Don Churro Cafe presents delicacies from the expansive dinner menu, such as ceviche peruano, empanadas and saltenas, gambas al ajillo, Ecuadorian llapingachos, bandeja paisa, and Venezuelan arepas. Homemade churros piped full of manjar blanco (caramel) or delicious Nutella are sprinkled with powdered sugar for good measure. To ensure the quality of our food, all dishes are cooked to order using the freshest ingredients. The chef uses canola or olive oil in all of our dishes, organic coffee in our specialty coffees and recycles all its cooking oil. “Muy Bien!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

At first I thought that this was a Mexican restaurant. Upon closer look, I saw that it was actually a variety of South American cuisines. I decided to chance it, if for nothing else but to try something new. That was a very good decision, indeed. The food here is spectacular, albeit a little pricey. Our server was extremely helpful and friendly. We had all of the empanadas they offered, and one was better than the next. Dinner portion was a little small, but very delicious. Dessert was very expensive, but we had the passion fruit cheesecake (too tart), and these very yummy cookies, anyway.

I will come back here the next time I'm in the area, as long as they still accept the restaurant.com certificate. They're a little pricey and the certificate sure helps.

“Authentic, good food, at a fair value”

Don Churros is a great little restaurant with authentic South American cuisine and friendly employees. The empanadas are excellent as are some of the entrees like the Milanesa de Carne or the Churrasco. If you are looking for something a little bit different and tasty, I would recommend this place.

“Yum - Excellent tapas and ceviche!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

We were in the mood for tapas, and we were happy to have found Don Churro Cafe after the lunch rush one Saturday afternoon. We sat at a two-top and were immediately greeted by Andy, our server. We tried six tapas in total, staggering the order. The tapas came out promptly, were hot, and were served with a side of cilantro-based dipping sauce. Our favorites were the Patacon con Todo (Fried plantains, topped one each with beef, chicken, and pork) and the Gambas al Ajillo (Garlic Shrimp), although some other tapas seemed to blur together. As much as we enjoyed our tapas, we had to constantly shuffle our plates around to make room on the small table :/.

The sangria (red) is one of the best we've had in any restaurant - delicious AND had some umphf to it. We took our time eating, but Andy was attentive and refilled water glasses and cleared plates in a timely manner. Lastly, we ordered the Mixto Ceviche, which is comprised of white fish, shrimp, calamari, and baby mussels. This took much longer to come out, but we were happy to let our tapas settle a bit. The ceviche was fresh and the marinade had a kick to it (both spicy and tangy), and we enjoyed the sweet potato and (I believe) hominy, cooked two ways. Be cautious of the side of habanero sauce - hot hot hot, but it was good to try.

Overall, we had a good time enjoying the sangria, hot tapas, and the ceviche. Maybe next time we'll sit at the bar or request a larger table for more room to spread out, but we will be coming here again.

I love this place!! Food and drinks are great - churros for dessert are amazing! Wait staff is very nice. There are a few tables outside to fit when it is nice out.

“Forgettable Experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

We enjoyed the mojitos we had but our dinner was just OK. Nothing was bad but, nothing was good enough for us to want to go back. The staff is friendly but the service is super slow. The ambiance is also just OK.
