“You Like Planes? Go Here”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2013

This is the annex of the Air and Space Museum that's in DC. The aircraft/Spacecraft are some of the collection that were too big for display in WDC. One of the space shuttels that flew in space was just moved in. One of the Concorde SSTs is here along with an SR-71 that set speed records. Since the museum is located between two of the runways at Washington Dulles there are opportunities to view the aircraft on final approach. ( 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. is a good time to watch for transatlantic arrivals.) There is also a "control tower" where you can watch the flights arriving and taking off and hear an audio feed from the Dulles tower.

“Awesome”

This is great activity for kids of all ages. Plus, it is FREE! Well, parking is $12, buy admission is free. There are usually amazing movies on the IMAX if you are into that, and the exhibits are breathtaking.

Highly recommend checking out the Space Shuttle, and make sure you go up to the ATC Tower as well for the panoramic view.

“From gliders to outer space.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2013

All typ4s of a/c are representative, military, civilian, aerobatic, sport & airliner. From early 1900's thru the Viet Nam War,, army, navy marine & coast guard. The galleries of WW1, WW11, Korea & Viet Nam are expected, its the James S. McDonnell Space Hanger that stands out. The main attraction is the space shuttle Discovery. Here a visitor will find rockets, missiles, satellites, space suits & probes and capsules. After the space hanger walk up the stairs to the Mary Baker Enger Restoration Hanger. Here visitors will be able to watch several a/c in difference stages of restoration.

On two sides of the main hanger are two levels of balcony walkway and side to side crosswalks. These walks allow a visitor to get close to the a/c hung from the ceiling. I would say at least 40 aircraft hang from the ceiling.

The museum has group tours every half hour. For eating, a large McDonalds is available on the main level, that walks into the museum's gift shop. The floor a/c have rope barriers. These a/c are not crowded together, enough open space to see both fuselage sides and front & rear. All a/c have been excellently restored. Many look as if they had flown to the museum and put on exhibit.

A review can describe the museum only so much, only a visit will so what is available. Admission is free. Parking is $15.00 for an entire day., Hours are 10:00 to 6:30. With eight and a half hours a visitor can take their time. I suggest the earliest arrival time to avoid the heavy crowds and the crowds are very heavy by 12:00. There are seats throughout the museum. Plenty of light for photography.

A visit is highly recommended.

Jack L., Syracuse, New York.

“Just go”

Don't miss out on your chance to see the last active space shuttle. If you're flying in our out of Washington, it's an excellent stop to combine with your way in our out.

“It's a bird, it's a PLANE!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

Docent tour with Jim Peacock was so informative. Volunteers conduct the tours and there is no admission charge. $15. for parking. All the major air entries in history of aviation are located here, right close to Airport grounds. Watch planes take off from an observation tower and witness the complex air traffic controllers work day. AND shuttle Discovery is housed here, unaltered since its last flight. Lots of children, strollers, wheelchairs (available at security desk), but very roomy floor space and observation bridges. IMAX offerings $. Fab Vacay day!
