“Must see if you have a day near WDC!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2013

See the Space Shuttle, Discovery, up close! See airplanes from the early 1900's to 707 and stealth planes! Just about every type of airplane is here to see along with the space shuttle and rockets! Plan to spend ALL DAY! The only bad thing is that there is no easy or inexpensive way to get to the museum if you don't have a car. A taxi from WDC is about $70 each way. You could take a shuttle or other to Dulles Airport (for $10-$20 pp) and then take a special shuttle to the museum (check with museum for times) for $0.50pp but this can mount up for even two people. But, if you can afford the trip (or have a car - parking $15) this is really a MUST SEE! If you really look at everything, it will take 5+ hours and that does not include any of the IMAX shows! Great for kids (who are inquisitive and have sufficient attention spans) and adults! It is a first class exhibit hall.
The other negative is that the ONLY FOOD is McDonalds!

“Space shuttle and much more - take the free narrated tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2013

It is a good 30 minute drive out of washington dc but well worth the trip. The museum is free but being on the grounds of Dulles, they charge $15 parking fee and there is plenty of parking. An Imax theatre is inside with at least 5 different films showing a day. We arrived with 10 minutes before the start of the free tour which takes place every couple of hours and joined in. It took approximately 2.5 hours although advertised as 1.5 but we really enjoyed it. The space shuttle is explained, the blackbird and many of the exhibits by tour guides who give their time for free and are very informative. Lots of opportunity to ask questions and take pictures and they are happy with you dropping out and rejoining at any time. I do recommend the tour as some of the stories of visitors that have come that used to fly the planes is wonderful. The enola gay was one of my highlights as was the wright flyer. There is a good shop and access to food although only mcdonalds. Places to grab water on the way around as well as seats near most of the planes for those needing a rest. A bonus is that you can go and look over the area where they are restoring planes and can see the staff working on them.

“Relatively boring - until you start spending $$”

The free exhibitions were boring and pedestrian. The IMAX movies were interesting and fun, but quite expensive...very disappointing for a National Museum!

“2 Air and Space museums (this and D.C.)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

My family really enjoyed seeing all the airplanes in full size. It was really cool to see the SR-71 blackbird, concorde and the space shuttle. The volunteers were nice. This was only 5 miles from our hotel so glad we went.
