“Unique”

The service was amazing and the food is good. The restaurant is in an old farmhouse which is beautifully restored and maintained. The grounds and views from the wrap around porch are fantastic. This is a must for anyone travelling near Salem, VA.

“Beautiful!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2013 via mobile

What an incredible setting for a home style restaurant! Out in the country, up in the hills, minutes from the Apelachian Trail. The food is served family style, with several meat selections and a whole pile of sides. Honestly, the sides seemed less than home-made (a lot less!). The fried chicken and roast beef that we got was good. The biscuits and apple butter were great!

Worth going for the ride there and the atmosphere alone!

“Kind of like grandma's house.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2013

The Home Place is a family style restaurant located in an old white farm house with a red roof in Catawba, not far from McAfee's Knob and Dragon's Tooth. (It is quite a favorite among hikers after a long day.) Family style dining is when you and your friends all sit around the table and share the food, kind of like you would do at grandma's house, where you pass the bowls of food around the table. At the Home Place, you are served fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, pinto beans, cooked apples, coleslaw and biscuits and apple butter. You also can add a choice of roast beef and/or ham. You are also served lemonade and ice tea and a berry cobbler with ice cream for dessert. (Other drinks are available.) It is also all you can eat. For the meal (with 2 meats) it will cost about $14/person. The restaurant décor is minimal with lots of mismatched dining room tables. But people don't come here and wait in line for an hour to look at the décor, they come to the Home Place for the fried chicken. They serve it piping hot and people keep coming back for more. After your meal you can sit in a rocking chair on the front porch or relax in a gazebo and take in the beautiful views of the mountains and fields. For myself, I thought the food was okay. I can see the draw, but for $14, I could have an excellent meal at a traditional establishment. My friends, however, loved it. They love the fact that it is all you can eat, that the chicken is delicious and maybe it gives them a sense of grandma's house. If nothing else, you should check it out at least once. They do not take reservations, so make sure you show up early and be prepared to wait.

“Comfort food heaven!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

We visited Homeplace last weekend while visiting our daughter at Virginia Tech. It's quite a drive from Blacksburg, but it was worth it. We arrived about 5:30 on a Saturday afternoon and were told it would be an hour and 15 minute wait. Since our daughter has been here before with friends, she brought a football and the kids tossed that around while we waited. The view is beautiful and we took lots of pictures as well.

We only waited an hour before our name was called, and our group of seven (four college students, our teenaged son and two parents) was seated promptly. There were pitchers of sweet tea and lemonade already on the table, but they also have sodas and of course water. The only big decision you need to make is how many meats your table would like. It's a decision for the entire table, one person can't get fewer meats if there's something they don't like. It was $14 per person for two meats and $15 a person for three meats. Since only two people in the group had been there before, we opted for all three meats. The meats are chicken, ham and roast beef. We were served quickly since it's a set menu. You can get free refills of everything except dessert.

The chicken was definitely the favorite and very tender and moist. We got two more helpings of chicken before the meal was over. I can't comment on the roast beef since I'm not a fan, but we did get a second helping of roast beef. The ham was the least favorite and I wouldn't get it again. It was good ham, but it was cold and sliced very thin. It was defintely overshadowed by the roast beef and especially the chicken. We didn't even finish the first plate of ham but everyone did try it.

The side dishes were very good with lots to choose from. The mashed potatoes were homemade and we went through three bowls of them! The gravy was very tasty, too. It was a lighter gravy, I'd guess it was chicken. The cole slaw was good, we ate one bowl of that. The green beans are made with bacon, and we went through two bowls of those. The corn was OK, we finished one bowl of that. Our least favorite side was the pinto beans with the pepper jelly to put on them. We didn't finish the first bowl, but mostly because everything else was so good. Another fave were the buttermilk biscuits with homemade apple butter. We went though two baskets of biscuits and most of the apple butter. Dessert was peach cobbler with ice cream. I'm not usually a fan of peaches, but it was good. We all finished them, even after all of that food!

They say that you can only take home the leftovers from your original servings, but our server told us to box everything up. The meat servings aren't as big for the second and third helpings, but the servings are the same for the side dishes. We ended up taking home one peice of chicken, a few slices of roast beef, and the rest of the original ham. We also took the green bean remnants and one leftover biscuit with the last of the apple butter.

All of the newbies in our group loved it and want to go back. I just wish we hadn't waited until our daughter's junior year to discover this place!

“Country Style Dining”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2013

The Home Place Restaurant is a favorite stop for folk refueling while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Set in the middle of some mountains in a very old farmhouse the area just sets hight expectations for a very good meal. Those expectations are met very satisfactorily. They bring all the food out in bowls, piping hot and full of the best food you'll ever eat. The biscuits are home made and they have home made applebutter (YUM). Everything is very, very good and they keep filling up those empty bowls. The desert is only one thing, some kind of fruit cobbler could be blueberry, peach, cherry....whatever it is you will LOVE IT. It is topped with ice cream and kids can just get the ice cream if they want. The rooms you eat in are country style and they wait on you hand and foot. The best place and atmosphere ever. No adult drinks, but I liked that. Very kid friendly....you may have to wait a long time to get seated so go early, but you will not regret your wait. Wonderful, wonderful place.
