“Lots of Butterflies”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

On the Eastern Shore of VA, literally right before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the Wildlife Refuge was a great stop. We spent about an hour there. The people that work there had great information and were happy to share. There were lots of butterflies and pretty flowers. Before it was a refuge it was a military spot protecting the Chesapeake Bay.

“WW II Bunker, Eastern Shore History and Wildlife”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

My family had a great time at this former military base turned wildlife refuge. Ranger John Miller happened to be on hand to show us the 16-inch gun from the USS Missouri. He advised us to go on top of the bunker, and what a view. Smith island can be seen nearby. The loop trail around the bunker is shaded, a blessing on a hot day.

The visitor center was just as good with history of the eastern shore as it relates to the local ecology. My family especially liked the film on the construction on the Bridge/Tunnel.

“Take a few minutes and smeel the flowers”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

We walked all along the Butterfly Trail. There is plenty of plant life to see, most everything in bloom, and butterflies everywhere. The day we went it was HOT, we did not complete all of the trails because of the heat and humidity. The staff at the Information Center was very nice, she could tell my wife was suffering from the heat so she offered her a nice refillable water bottle that she could fill with cold water before we walked back to the car, 1/2 mile away. I plan to go back in the Fall to explore the rest of the refuge.
