“Simple, Enjoyable Family Friendly Campground. EXCELLENT Stand Up Paddleboarding”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2011

We were a little cautious about Kiptopeke before we went. It had received from pretty rough reviews. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The campsites were spacious, although there wasn't any shade. The staff was friendly. The campground, beach, and facilities were clean and well kept. The shower houses had a lot of sand in them, but otherwise were clean. There aren't really any gimmicks, but if you are looking for a place to relax and spend some time together as a family, then I would completely recommend Kiptopeke. Oh, and the water is PERFECT for stand up paddleboarders of any skill level.

“The lodge at Kiptopeke Park is the best state lodge facility!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2011

When we visit Kiptopeke State Park, we always stay at the lodge instead of the camp ground; therefore, I can't really comment on the condition and the amenities of the camp site. However, the lodge here is the best of all the lodges in the VA state park system. It is clean, roomy and comfortable. Has a full kitchem facility and towels and bedding is provided; they are not fancy but serviceable. All private rentals on the other hand, you have to pay extra for them. I love this lodge; we've been here on three different occasions and all have been positive experiences. The living room has high vaulted ceiling and lots of windows for open, airy feel of a vacation home. Dining table can easily seat 12 people and the counter top eat-in area can accomodate 4 more people. There are 2 rooms each with 2 bunk beds, 2 rooms each with 2 single beds and 2 rooms each with a full size bed. and three full bath rooms. There is front and back porch and outdoor charcoal grill and a separate fire pit for campfire. There is a gas fireplace for off-season visits. Wood floors throughout. The beach and the fishing pier is walking distance and pets are allowed in the lodge with a small fee. Only thing I miss is having a washer and dryer.
Highly recommended and will visit again soon!

“Below Par for a VA State Park”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2011

We stayed for one night at Kiptopeke on a four day photography trip. The staff was very nice. The bathhouse on the other hand was fairly disgusting. There was toilet paper all over the floors and the showers were dirty. We stayed in a tent site for the night, which was not too bad - fairly spacious. The RV sites on the flip side were so packed together it looked like a camper storage lot. If you are looking for a quick stay, this campground may get by on convenience. On the other hand, if you are looking for a place to bivouac the family for a week, you might want to look elsewhere.

“average campground”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2011

Kiptopeke is an average campground priced at an above average rate. It is geared to large RVs that do not require camping amenities apart from hookups. There is no sink to wash dishes, not even a sink in the laundry room. The bathrooms were dirty even at 9.00am after the staff said they had already been cleaned. Shade on the electric sites is minimal in the afternoon and the tall trees between the beach and campground block any afternoon breezes. Security appeared good - police patrolled campground frequently. Trails and beaches were OK. Swimming beach to the north of pier is good for kids and dogs can be taken on beach south of pier but there are signs saying swimming is not allowed on the south beach. As far as we understand, even campers had to pay to fish from pier. We were very disappointed with the park and moved on a day early.

We spent a week in July 2010 at Kiptopeke State park. Nature trails, walkways, the beach, and fishing pier were littered with trash. The fishing pier bath house and main campground bath houses were absolutely filthy. Showers full of sand! We've been numerous times before and it's never been this dirty. They advertise WiFi connection. You have to go to a small building in the boat ramp parking lot, sit outside at a picnic table and there is no connectivity for Dell computers. Service provided by Verizon with only one bar of coverage. It's a joke!

In spite of a horrible economy, we found it impossible to attract and keep maintenance staff this year. The Eastern Shore is a tough employment market! Between visitors who refuse to use trash cans and wash off the sand before entering the bathhouses and trash that washes up on the shore, staff and volunteers were overwhelmed trying to keep everything picked up although we spend a significant amount of time doing just that.

We actually do not advertise the wi-fi to customers until they are on site. I agree that it is marginal although computers like yours with a built in firewall seemed to have the most problems. Most customers were thrilled to have it and experienced far better connections than you describe.
