A great day out for both the Mother's Day weekend and Arborfest (October) garden fairs. Lots of fun activities, vendors, beautiful flowers, plants, shrubs and exotic finds!

I've been there for plant sales, classes and to just wander the grounds. It is a wonderful place set in the Virginia countryside with lots to see, especially for a plant lover like me. There are highlights that anyone would enjoy such as the flowering trees and plants in the spring and the ginko grove in the autumn.

We were wandering around touring the country on a weekend and found the State Arboretum by accident. Great trails mixed with open fields, orchards, seed beds, and mixed terrains from wetlands to well maintained gardens. There are scheduled events throughout the year (moon hikes, movie nights, workshops) and we grabbed a handful of brochures so we could return to enjoy this hidden gem again and again. If you like open spaces, nature, need a place for the kids to learn and run around or just spend time with someone special this could be the spot. No fee, but donations are appreciated. They do have some ticketed/fee events (concerts, etc.). Gift shop was closed when we visited.

Didn't even know there WAS a state arboretum! But what a find, whether you want an easy, historic walk or a self-guided lesson on herb gardens, butterfly gardens, native plants or anything else.

The 3-mi loop road is rolling and easy; the main building beautiful and part of the University of Virginia.

We'll be back on Saturday for a star-gazing event!
