“Awesome breakfast items, slow service/long waits”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Gillies is one of those places you will pass by over and over. Their breakfast in the best in Blacksburg! Their French toast is thick and cooked perfectly. I also love their broiled grapefruit, which sounds odd but it's delicious. Also, they have breakfast specials which tend to be unique and delicious.

I've been there for dinner once and wasn't very impressed. Then again, this is a vegetarian place and I am not a vegetarian! Be prepared for long waits, especially on Sunday mornings.

“Awesome food”
Reviewed July 19, 2013 via mobile

If you want breakfast there is no better place on Blacksburg. The food is a bit pricey, but the quality is very good. Also very good place for the veggie lovers.

“Great Food and Service”

Excellent Asparagus and walnut soup. They have lots of menu options and good service. Definitely a place to try whether you are vegetarian or not.

“It's a gem: don't say no because its vegetarian.”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

This is one of those rare restaurants that defies your expectations, in a very good way. I some how didn't catch on that this was a vegetarian restaurant when we ordered (there were eggs on the menu..), but I didn't miss a thing. Every dish was tasty and even the carnivores will be pleasantly surprised.

Our party had pancakes (buttermilk, pretty good) the banana/walnut french toast (simply AMAZING - everyone had a bite), and a breakfast sandwich (among other things) that I swear had something that looked and tasted exactly like sausage, but wasn't.

When we go again, I will skip the pancakes (good but nothing special) in favor of a Red Earth, Gillie's Special or Breakfast Burrito. Or Chappie's Choice. Or the Banana Walnut French Toast. Too much to choose from, truly. Don't forget to read the board on the wall for the daily specials (and read carefully: You only THOUGHT is said sausage!).

The restaurant is densely spaced, simple tables and chairs, which makes it good for very casual dining (and kids). Service is very efficient but don't expect a lot of chit-chat. These folks are busy and they work hard. But it is also noisy so this will not be a quiet start to your day. Leave that for someplace else.

One of the keys is patience, however. Especially on the weekend, the waits can get long for brunch so go early. We called literally five minutes before we got there to see if there was a wait. Was told no, but five minutes later it was 30 minutes. Also best to go hungry as you will not leave disappointed..

“A place a non veggie could love!”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

Literally dragged here by my veggie conscious wife and daughter. I was pleasantly surprised. Yummy salad and bruschetta style pizza fir the bill, accompanied by an organic "Arnold Palmer" iced tea. Left feeling filled while not stuffed, food being tasty and flavorful without being overpowered by butter and sauces. Scoot next door to their bakery where we bought homemade muffins for our trip home. Will be back in a flash.
