We were just talking about Liberty Station. It's time for one of our fall trips to the Parkway with our usual stop at the restaurant.
We have been hearing it's not as great as it used to be. I notice reviews since the reopening are not so great. We have long loved Liberty Station...enjoyed the older lady who always sat us, the tootsie rolls in a big bowl by the door and all the local brochures so we could keep up with things, the train that managed to pass by every time we were there, the convivial atmosphere, the wonderful food and terrific warm friendly service.
When we ate there last, many things were the same...the tootside rolls, the brochures, the train. But the atmosphere was different, the food only fair, the dessert we enjoyed regularly was terrible and the waitress put it on our table without telling us to try it first in case there's a problem. (Or, better yet, to not serve it) We were all shocked immediately at its appearance. We took a couple of exploratory nibbles and, wide eyed, asked for our waitress. We are generally peaceful, happy, respectful people. When she finally came she took the dessert to the kitchen, returned with a defensive attitude and said in a confrontational way we won't charge you for the bite you took. We were so taken aback we just said 'what?'. We thought we heard incorrectly. She repeated defensively that we wouldn't be charged for the bites of the terrible dessert. It never crossed our mind that we would be.
The whole negative vibe was that bad that, after years of enjoying the place, we are reluctant to return. Part of us wants to believe it'll be okay next time. But it was just such a negative memory last time.
