Description: As old as the hills . . . The Peaks of Otter have drawn settlers and travelers to the region for more than 8,000 years. The community whose vestiges remain to be explored today had its beginning in 1766 when Thomas Wood arrived from Pennsylvania. The wife of one of Wood’s descendants would open her home as the area’s first lodging for travelers in 1834. By the late 1800s, Peaks of Otter would be home to some 20 families, a school, a church, and a resort hotel. In the mid 1900s, the location was selected for special attention as the National Parks Service developed recreation and service areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Abbott Lake was constructed and the Peaks of Otter Lodge opened in 1964.Today, we invite you to be part of the future of this storied natural and cultural destination as it continues to attract visitors and travelers in the 21st century.

“Charming and good dining experience”
Reviewed December 17, 2011

This is an old resort with lots of mountain charm. Dinning here is delightful with a georgous view of the lake and hills. We had both lunch and dinners here and the meals were pretty good overall. What you get for the price was very good and we'll be returning.

“Strange waiter”
Reviewed November 20, 2011

It was very very foggy, and visibility was <100 feet. We stopped at the The Peaks of Otter Lodge to get off the road and have some coffee and hot chocolate. Our waiter was a large man with no personality, was just weird. It was a somewhat dirty, but the coffee and hot chocolate felt good, the rest rooms were clean and the gift shop had some diverse merchandise. The waiter took forever (there were 5 other people in the dining room) to bring the check. He seemed to be in a fog like the weather outside.

“Mountain atmosphere, good food, great service”
Reviewed October 11, 2011

My family ate here for dinner on 10/8/11
Mindy was our server and she was knowledgeable and had a real sparkle in her eye.

Son and I both had the Southern Fried Chicken dinner- half a chicken, and I have had a lot of fried chicken, it is certainly tied for the best! Cooked fresh when you order so it takes about 20 minutes.
We enjoyed the large salad bar while we waited- could have made a meal on that alone!
Mindy brought us bread- I have also made a lot of bread and tasted a lot of bread and it was exceptional- lightly crusty outside and chewy inside- I could have made a meal on that alone, too.

I ordered the baked sweet potato which was extremely good.
Son had the mashed potatoes, as did my husband who ordered the Roast Turkey dinner with stuffing and cranberry sauce.
He had 5 thick slices of fresh roast turkey and could not eat it all.

The only slightly negative note was the mashed potatoes.
Now my guys did not notice this at first, but when I sampled hubby's mashed potatoes they were instant- really GOOD instant, but definitely instant mashed potatoes.
Would not have noticed if we had not had home made mashed potatoes made from fresh russets the night before, but the flavor is unmistakable- both of instant, and of the real thing.

All that being said, we'll come back when we are in the area, we were too stuffed for dessert, so I can't comment on that.
Both son and I took home boxes with a breast and wing, and I had mine cold for lunch on Sunday and WHOO-EEE! was it GOOD!

“lunch good value, dinner less so”
Reviewed October 7, 2011

We have enjoyed this restaurant with its fine location on the Blue Ridge Parkway by a lake and the mountain several times, mainly for dinner, usually at a weekend when it is very busy, you have to wait, and it is often a good buffet with crab. This October we went on a weekday for lunch, almost empty but serving at 3pm and good value, Roast Turkey, and Salmon Salad. Fast courteous service. Sighting of otters and deer free.
