$3 per person is a steal for the experience you'll gain from this short mountain road drive and countless number of hikes. Take a short trip up the Summit Trail to a well maintained observation tower with views of the vast Vermont and New Hampshire landscape. Wonderful photo opportunities and even the chance to see some wildlife (a juvenile bear was spotted on the way down the mountain during this trip).

Trails are available to walk from the base to the top. For those less adventuresome a paved road leads from the base (off the Back Mountain Rd) to a parking lot on top. From here is a trail(s) that leads to the lookout tower and various other scenic view areas, looking down on nearby Windsor, the Connecticut River and the Windsor-Cornish Covered Bridge. The trail is about a mile long or less and is well-marked.

We camp at mount Ascutney state park ever year. They have the nicest people there. We stay in a lean-to. So fun! But weather you climb 8 miles to the top of the mountain or drive up you will always experience the most breath taking views for miles around you. Enjoy and make time to go up there, you will not regret it.

Hiked about 1.5 miles at the base to two waterfalls off cascade falls road in morn. Grabbed some food at ascutney market on rte 5, then drove up the summit access road to the pavilion...wow. After lunch we drove to summit lot and hiked the remaining 3/4 mike to peak. Stood on USGS bronze marker for proof! There is a great fire observation tower at peak. Lots of butterflies at peak and in stomach on the ride down the steep access road; kids loved it. We camped at nearby wilgus state park, so admission was free.

This is a great state park to get away from people. We hardly encountered any other hikers. We hiked last week, the last week in June. After hiking, I did tick check and found one on my neck and a teeny tiny nymph on my sock line on my calf. The latter looked like a speck and was reddish. It wasted no time in biting me.
If you don't mind the ticks, it's away from people. We did see a small snake so be careful stepping into leaves by branches. I think in June, it's just ticky and buggy so plan accordingly and enjoy the solititude.
