“great, except in some respects”

Really I think we'd like to give 3.5 stars. We found Windham Hill Inn to be a really beautiful B&B in it's setting. We really enjoyed how quiet it was-no busy noisy roads to bother us-just lots and lots of chatty birds. We definitely enjoyed some of the amenities the B&B had to offer such as the pool, walks on the property, the gardens, and the tennis court.

We stayed in the North Loft room which was very spacious-we were greeted with a nice plate of fresh fruit, bottles of Saratoga water and a bowl of candy which was a lovely welcome. We found the room to be very clean and tidy-but we also found it to be very dated in decor. Our major beef with the room was the linens-the sheets felt like sand paper and the towels had been around the block-I guess when paying $400 a night this is a detail that should be paid attention to.

In our 3 night stay-we had the 4 course dinner included in our stay. I'm very glad that we were not paying out of pocket for the dinner. We felt some of it was very good but some of it was really not so good. In the dining room-we also noticed that there was an attempt to have a very fancy air-when we were in Vermont-in an old farm house! I would rather had attention paid attention to really excellent and clean food rather than-would I like a silly bottle of European sparkling water!

The breakfast was hit and miss too. We did enjoy the homemade granola, yogurt and fresh fruit bar. Also, there is an option for simple hearty oatmeal instead of 2 other rich options. Some of the breakfast were very good-others were dogged with trying to look fancy while not executing good taste-case in point my gray hashbrown cake that was extremely undercooked and inedible.

There were really some nice things about this B&B-but there were really some marks not being made-and for the money it just didn't seem quite right.

  • Liked — the location-absolutely gorgeous
  • Disliked — the linens

The Windham Hill is so beautiful, it is quintessential Vermont, the flowers and trees all over the property were so beautiful.

Tennis was fun, rackets and balls were provided for us.

The four course dinner was delicious. I had a 1 hour in room massage which was so relaxing.

We stayed in Matildas room, which had a fantastic whirlpool tub and a deck and amazing views of the mountains. also a wonderful vermont fireplace

Breakfast every morning was delicious! eggs benedict, brioche french toast, crepes, granola everything was great

The bathroom amenities were so nice also. Housekeeping provided evening turndown service.

My only criticisms are that:
1) there are very few restaurants nearby, as in within 20 miles of the inn.

2) We were not provided with a good map of the area, and we kept getting lost.

3) It was verry cool out at night but the AC was still turned on...i called the innkeeper 3 nights in a row to turn it off because it had to be done from outside the building. they did turn it off and once they did i was happy

overall the property was beautiful and if you are looking for a romantic relaxing luxurious getaway i highly recommend it.

Here are some things i recommend doing in the area:
Visit the town of Grafton and taste cheese at the Grafton cheese company

Walk around Brattleboro, there are 2 really good antique stores on main street. We had a delicious lunch at the Backside Cafe. Recommend the turkey reuben highly.

Visit the town of Walpole, New Hampshire and eat gourmet food at Burdicks or have their homeades teas \chocolate.
Walpole is extremely pretty with lots of steeples and historic buildings to take pictures of.

Here are 2 really good restaurants under 20 miles from the Inn
Astas : great swiss food- reservations are essential
Out Back (not part of the chain) for nice lodge ambiance and good salads and burgers and american food

Most of the restaurants are located in Brattleboro but that is at least 30 minutes from the inn and sometimes we didn't want to go so far

It was okay....it was nice, but not amazing. We stayed in a smaller less expensive room, and there wasn't anything special about it. The inn itself is nice, with afternoon cookies and tea, cheese before dinner, etc, but the room itself was average. The bathroom was old and very plain, definitely needs an update. I'm sure the property is amazing in summer, but it was very cold and icy when we were there.

My husband and I with another couple stayed there for a weekend getaway and had a wonderful experience. The staff goes out of its way to help you and ensure yoru needs are met. The rooms are lovely. The property is beautiful. We used their complimentary snowshoes and enjoyed a morning hike around the property. The breakfast and dinner were both excellent! We hope to go back soon.

My husband and I stayed at the Windham Hill Inn when we got engaged in May 2005, and we were fortunate enough to be able to return this January for a winter stay. We were reminded how magical Vermont and this wonderful inn are! The rooms are lovely, the staff attentive and friendly, and the food OUTSTANDING! The setting is absolutely lovely, and it is truly a magical and relaxing getaway that is perfect for spending some quiet time with a loved one. We highly recommend the inn, and we hope to return very soon for another fantastic stay!

We stayed for a weekend with friends to celebrate a 50th birthday and had a wonderful experience. The rooms are excellent. The food is excellent. The staff is excellent. There are so many wonderful reviews on this site that I don't need to repeat all the accolades. I'll just say that if you want a wonderful get-away, the Windham Hill is a place to go.

My husband and I stayed in the Jesse Lawrence Room---gas fireplace, soaking tub, king size bed, gorgeous views! The room is on the third floor of the main inn---relaxation! This inn is truly one of our very favorites. Elegant without being pretentious, anything you might need is right there and there are no "airs." We took advantage of the mid week reality break which included dinner both nights. The inn was closing for a week around Christmas which made us very nervous about the food. No need to worry-the food was phenomenal. Highlights included an appetizer that featured quail on a bed of homemade papardelle with dried mushrooms and a dessert of a pear poached in red wine accompanied by gorgonzola icecream. Breakfasts were decadent--mini smoothies to start, baked item of the day (such as a plum ginger muffin), and choice of hot entree--my favorite was chocolate chip belgian waffles with raspberries. The service on all ends was really quite good. Our dinner service the first night was a bit "off"--drinks remaining unfilled and a bit overlapping of courses but the food itself and the atmosphere more than made up for it (as did the generous glass of wine poured by the bartender ). We so enjoyed working on puzzles and snow shoe-ing!! Snow shoes and cross country skis are available in the ski shack. How fun was it to look out our window and watch wild turkeys in the snow flurries. This was our second visit to the inn. I can't wait for our third.
