My Mom and I have traveled to The Paw House Inn six times since 2006. There are many places to travel with your dogs, but none as accommodating as The Paw House. When you arrive, you're given a list of restaurants and parks that a dog friendly (not all state parks in Vermont are). On our first trip, Mitch went through the park list with us to find the ones best suited to my 10 year old lab. Current vaccine records are a must, so you always know the other guests aren't sending your dog home with any added surprises. If your dog is comfortable with stairs I recommend, "Shakespeare's Retreat". It's a large room upstairs, with a sitting area and TV in a seperate nook. For the dogs & people more comfortable on the first floor, "Spot!" is a great room. It has a private back deck my dogs can't get enough of (If you have any concerns about a specific room; contact Mitch & he'll walk you through what will & won't work for your family). Go to breakfast! It's a good way to meet the other dog owners, and Mitch makes a killer omelette. Lastly, make sure you climb the hill in the backyard. It's a quiet beautiful area to sit with your friends and take in the Vermont view.

Andrea and I stayed here last week for our ersatz anniversary/Valentine's Day trip (I have to travel on business on our actual anniversary, and we're pretty allergic to doing anything romantic on Valentines day because it's so over-commercialized). I was a little reluctant to stay at the Paw House because we don't actually have dogs, but Andrea talked me into it. I was concerned that there would be odors, or a lot of noise, or dog hair on the sheets.

My concerns turned out to be misplaced. Aside from some dog-oriented theming, the B&B is just like any nice B&B. It's an old country farmhouse that's been remodeled into a B&B, so it has original hardwood floors in the bedrooms and common areas. Our room had a massive four-poster bed, which was very comfortable and came with a good variety of pillows. The sheets were clean and smelled fresh, and there were no untoward aromas.

The attached bath was small, but cute. The only unusual furnishing was a dog bed placed prominently near the people bed. Again, surprisingly, no dog smell from the bed, and no hair. Andrea theorized that dogs, who have noses even more sensitive than mine, prefer not to smell strange dogs on their bedding.

There's a fair amount of public space downstairs in the B&B. We didn't make much use of it, but I did relax on one of the couches for a while, and it was very comfortable. If I'd been in the mood to lie around reading, either couch would have been a good place to do it. The Internet worked well--I had to finish up some work after we arrived, and had no trouble getting online, downloading what I needed, and getting it done.

There was only one other couple in the B&B. Unlike us, they actually brought a dog, a German Shepherd who they described as "a teenager." We only saw him once, around breakfast on the second day, but he's a gorgeous dog. The owner, Mitch, brought his own dog, Stanley, in for a visit as well. Stanley is an adorable little dog.

It might seem weird that a non-dog-owner is talking about all the dogs there, but there's a reason for it--they served as a nice social icebreaker. I'm normally pretty standoffish and don't feel all that comfortable talking to other guests at a B&B, but the dogs gave us something to talk about. What dog owner doesn't want to talk about their dog? This led to some good tips on local ski areas (we wound up skiing Pico both days, and had a really great time).

The breakfast food was yummy--I had an omelet both days, but they also offered us waffles, toast and fresh fruit (cantaloupe one day, pineapple the other), and they had yogurt and granola on offer as well.

I loved staying at the Paw House in. Our dogs loved the experience too. The innkeepers were super friendly and helpful. Breakfast (homemade muffins and entree) were delicious both days. If you love your pet and want to travel with them, I definitely recommend staying at the Paw House Inn

We booked two nights with our two dogs based on their pet-friendly facilities. This place is not just pet-friendly, it's pet-focused. We arrived a bit early for check in and were almost immediately greeted by one of the owners in the drive. Although they live off-premises, you wouldn't know as they are very accessible. Dogs are welcome in the guest rooms and the public areas of the Inn, with the exception of the dining room. There is a fenced-in area outside for the dogs to play off-leash, complete with agility course. For any time you need to leave your dogs, Mario's Playhouse is available for that purpose. Your dog is given its own indoor run, the building is heated, clean and comfortable. Not only is there a refrigerator for storing food, a sink for washing bowls etc., a shower/tub for cleaning muddy dogs, they even have Animal Planet playing on TVs for your dogs to enjoy. During the day, staff are available to check in on your dogs, take them out for a run in the park or just a walk, whatever you request. After hours, the facility is available on a self-serve basis.

We stayed in the Chase room, which is decorated with a very doggie theme, as are all the rooms, I suspect. It was very clean and comfortable, quite large, with beautiful views. Bathroom was a bit on the small side, but perfectly adequate. The dogs had their own custom built bed, but preferred the futon, for which a protective cover was thoughtfully provided.

The breakfasts were very good: freshly prepared for each guest, with a choice of imaginative dishes which change daily. The hosts and staff are clearly interested in pleasing their guests, human and canine. We'll be back when the snow is gone, so we can check out some of the hiking trails they recommended.

Within a year from our first visit we noticed a tangible decline in service, food, and accomodation, not to mention in the safety and care for our pet. Neither the kennel nor the house were locked / secured during the day or at night. The kennel was unattended the majority of the time, and no provisions were on display for veterinary emergencies.
With no innkeepers resident at the Inn, and as the only guests, we found ourselves having to call 411 in the middle of the night to locate a veterinary clinic that could take immediate care of our pet that was in great pain.

This is our livelihood. We do all we can. Every day. Almost 10 years in business - we make ourselves available 24/7 day and night. It is a privilege to do so. The fact that a dog was injured while staying with us shakes us very deeply. Thank you for reading our response.

My husband and I have been talking about going away over Christmas for years; however, we have been hesitant to do so because we did not want to leave our yellow labrador retriever, Dakota, at home in boarding. We did our research and found the Paw House Inn. We needed a place in which we could drive to and include Dakota in our daily activities. Everyone at the Inn was very helpful. Although we were there over Christmas, recommendations were made to us for restaurants and activities. We used Mario's playhouse only during breakfast and found it perfect to suit our needs. Our goal was to spend as much time with Dakota on this trip; however, it was a comfort to know the playhouse was available to guests. We took full advantage of the beautiful trails in the area in which we could all do some fun hiking. At the end of the day, Dakota was exhausted, but happy, as he relaxed with us in our room. Although we did not spend much time during the day at the Inn, Dakota enjoyed his interaction with the other dogs. Thanks to Mitch, Jen and the entire Paw House Inn staff for caring so much about our four legged children!

We have just returned from 2 nights at the Paw House with our dog (Buckingham) who has never been kenneled before. We had no hesitation in leaving Buckingham with Mitch while we went skiing for the day, when we came back he had been walked in the forest so we all ended up tired. The playhouse was great and Buckingham actually wanted to go in there every time we left the room. There is a trail walk behind the property where you can exercise your dog.
Mitch is a great host, cooks a good breakfast and recommended very nice places to eat at in the evening.
Mitch - thanks also for the book recommendation.
All in all a great experience and the 3 of us will definitely be back when we are next in Vermont.
Mark
