This place was wonderful in terms of decor and ambience. As the earlier reviewer listed you have to be cautious of the noise level. We too booked the Dahlia room which was lovely and modern!! However, it is MUCH smaller then shown on the website...also we had people above us walking all over and heard doors slamming next to us..if i had known i would have booked a room above. Nonetheless, our room had DVD player and a TV with a fireplace and a whirlpool tub which was great! We also had a porch in the back which was nice touch! The breakfasts were wonderful each day with Michael's fresh muffins which are to die for! We also had a romantic dinner at their restaurant, which is known for its food- from the vegetarian standpoint it wasn't worth the bill but for my husband he enjoyed it and essentially we paid for the decor. The presentation was outstanding and the service real good but we had a better time at Toscanella's-it's a pizza joint just down the road on the right side. Great garlic bread and fantastic pizza. We enjoyed the afternoon tea as well-that was a nice touch of teas, coffee, apple cider (which was delicious) and fresh cheeses and breads with some nuts, though one of the afternoons there was only beverages (not sure why). Some other things to note in the area, if u like to shoot pool go to the Billiard Sanctuary also down the street from the inn. Or go to the river valley market for some vermont cheese, maple syrup etc. Defintely go to spectacular view which is up the road for some great pics. If you like teddy bears and cant make the trip to burlington, then check out Mary Myers in Townshead (about a 20 min drive or so) and very scenic!! Overall a great time but just good to know to pick the right room so ur not disturbed!

  • Liked — the breakfasts!

What a gorgeous setting and a beautiful building. Interesting decor -- every room different, and a lovely garden. Unique touches like a beautiful basket of apples for guests to partake of as they came and went during the day.

However, we did encounter a few problems that definitely lowered our enjoyment. We stayed in the Dalhia room, which while beautiful, wasn't very comfortable. It was very small with not much ventilation -- one half of a French door that opened onto a small patio, which was connected to other patios. Around the corner from our patio, guests were smoking up a storm, so we not only weren't able to sit outside, but we couldn't even keep the one window open for air in the middle of the summer (there's no AC in the hotel). We checked in around 4 pm, and by 5 pm someone had checked into the room above us, stomping about, and there was no peace and quiet until about 11 pm. The beautiful hardwood floors translated into an all night noise session.

Lesson 1: in old wooden buildings like this, get an upstairs room. Lesson 2: the owners should make the place 100% non smoking as the patios and rooms are so very close together. The website photos make them look very secluded, but they're not. The view of the garden is sublime though.

  • Liked — decor, unusual building
  • Disliked — noise, smoking guests

We arrived later than expected and felt that we had inconvenienced Stan, one of the two Innkeepers (the other being Michael the excellent Chef). Our welcome wasnt the most warming and as we were really looking forward to our stay here we were a little dejected. We were shown quickly around the Inn and then to our room. Our room (Apple Blossom) was excellent and a real pleasure to come home to each night, the views of a morning were spectacular. The bathroom was on the small side and we felt it let the room itself down. We were surprised that there was no hairdryer in the room, but had to ask for one from reception as well as a iron and ironing board (in a Inn of this nature we would have thought that these items would be standard) The breakfasts were superb, unfortunately on the night we wished to have dinner the dining room was closed so we never got to sample dinner, but feel sure it would have been excellent. The communial areas are lovely, very warm and inviting. Overall the Inn is excellent, a little expensive but we felt it was well worth it. The only thing to let the inn down we felt was unfortunately the attitude of the Innkeepers, they were polite but certainly the most unfriendly of all the six Inns we stayed in on our travels through New England. Neither of them was to be seen when we checked out, this was left to the girl on reception and when we actually handed in our key there was no one around whatsoever and we just had to leave our key on the reception desk. This attitude is such a shame because otherwise the Deerhill was an excellent place to spend some time.

The inn is in a fantastic location close to many picturesque Vermont villages and the mountains.

The rooms and common areas are very well apppointed with a warm, homely feel.

Unfortunately we didn't get to try the restaurant for dinner, but the breakfasts were the best we had on our 2 week holiday in New England.

Best to book either directly with the inn, on the web or through a recommended travel agent. Unfortunately we used the Vacations Group in the UK and were grossly over-charged. In addition it took them 5 weeks to pay back a refund offered immediately by the innkeepers themselves.

Thank you for the amazing, romantic weekend. The food was unbelievable! Even though it rained the whole weekend, the inn was so wonderful, we didn't even miss a beat. I truly felt that we were able to have the getaway that dreams are made of.

Thank you!
