“Inn with an identity crisis”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2011

The Inn is a beautiful old building on great land which seems to be suffering from an identity crisis. Apparently the Inn changed management a year ago and it's apparently. While the inn previously had thoughtfully placed decor and smartly picked furniture pieces, it now had cheap, Holiday Inn style mass reproduced art and cheap, floral pattern couches interspersed with the old decor. There are fake flowers all over the hotel which makes no sense. Why not just go outside and pull wildflowers off the side of the road? Fake flowers in Vermont just don't make any sense whatsoever. The pool area and ponds are treated as an afterthought. My wife and I went to sit by the pond and there were two, non-adjustable lounge chairs which is great if you want to lay back and look at the sky but awful if you want to read or just sit. There are no towels to sit by the pool and no way to get any beverage. One feels like they're seeing the slow death of a once well maintained and cared for inn. It wouldn't take much to remove the bad art, ugly flower curtains in the rooms in the main inn, fake flowers and have better service to guests who want to sit outside but it would make an ENORMOUS difference in the feel of the inn. Please bring the old inn back or at least let someone with taste do a clean up.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the main inn, stay in the newer (and considerably more expensive) cottages.

I have had the pleasure of working at The Inn at Sawmill Farm for the past 17 years.
The past year has seen many changes,;new owners, a new kitchen, new menu, improvements to the exterior of the building and minor changes to the interior.(flat screen tvs).
The tasteful decor, timeless pieces, furnishings and artwork that have adourned the inn for many years past, still remain.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary there over the weekend. Couldn't have found a more interesting old New England inn. Many common areas filled with interesting decorations and memorabelia. Made some new friends also celebrating their anniversary, hiked in the mountains and just relaxed. Best of all its easily accessible from our norther Massachusetts home - we'll be back, maybe with our kids to swim in the pool, use the tennis courts and canoe and fish in the ponds.

This trip was a mini-vacation for my best of over 50 years and myself, and we had never seen or visited the Inn at Sawmill Farm. We were very pleasantly surprised in all ways. The room was very beautiful - large, comfortable, quite pretty and even had a little balcony that allowed us to enjoy the beautiful Vermont day.

The grounds are beautiful and there are loads of activities of all sorts although we primarily walked around and took in the gorgeous Vermont June day.

Everyone we had any dealings with - from when we checked in until we checked out - went the extra step to help us. That included the waitstaff in the restaurant at the Inn -where we had dinner and breakfast the next morning - to the person who checked us in and gave us a tour and the person who checked us out.

We would definitely recommend this to families as well as single travelers - and old and young as there really is a lot to do at the Inn. We would stay again if we happened to be in the area.

Beautiful building and scenery, friendly staff and an overall great stay. Such a peaceful atmosphere and the room was perfect with a balcony to top it off. The home made cookies and the blueberry pancakes for breakfast was a great extra. The old world charm was just what my mom and I had hoped for and it truly exceeded our expectations. Stay here and you wont be disappointed!

Staying here was a treat, from the lovely, spacious room with balcony overlooking the property, to the top quality traveler amenities, to the library with games, books and warm, homemade cookies to the delicious, full serve breakfast in the morning. We had a delicious dinner in the restaurant on site, and at the table next to us was another local innkeeper and his family. If you are in the area for skiing, foliage, or to visit the larger towns of Brattleboro or Bennington that are not too far away, you should definitely plan a stay here!

The change in the restaurant from a five star dining experience to a one star "Bertucci" style Italian Bistro is criminal. The previous chef assembled a wonderful menu and the service was outstanding. It was worth the premium pricing. The current family style menu, lacks imagination and based our first meal, the quality of the food is poor. A watery Caesar salad started off our experience. The homemade bread was cake-like, with melted butter brushed on the sides. The Chicken dish was barely cooked, rubbery and light pink. The veal was soggy and tasteless. It sat on a small portion of box pasta in a bland sauce. The service was non-existent. Our waiter proudly announced that she went from cleaning room to wait staff when the new owners opened the restaurant. It showed. We had to ask a waiter that we recognized from the previous staff to help us with extra drinks, to find dessert and finally the bill after the disappearance of our waiter. Coffee or after dinner drinks were not offered. During the last half of our meal, the new owner sat in the corner table eating dinner and drinking wine. The new chef came out to announce to her and the dining room that he was sorry for not having artichokes because "they were rotten". Never approached any tables to welcome or check with her new customers. The only redeeming feature is the pastry chef was retained and his signature dessert, Coconut Cake was still five star. The classic Inn at Saw Mill and Nonna's (I say NO to Nonna's) are an odd pair. The previous menu and quality of service is what you would expect to be matched with a high end Inn. Watch for Gordan Ramsey to show up a year from now to make over this restaurant and menu. It is very disappointing to lose a quality restaurant but even more for it to be replaced with one on the opposite end of the dining spectrum.

My husband and I frequently visit Mount Snow throughout the winter season. We did not realize the Inn at Saw Mill had new ownership. It is a wonderful and welcome change! We had always loved the beautiful atmosphere there and we were happy to see that all of that remains the same. When you walk through the doors, the cozy country elegance makes you feel like you are somewhere special. You can just kick back and relax by the fire with a drink and some great appetizers if you choose.

Previously, the atmosphere was somewhat stuffy, and the menu extremely pricey. We were so happy to see that the restaurant had changed to "Nonna's," a family style Italian restaurant. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The staff was extremely friendly and made us feel so welcome.

The rooms are as beautifully appointed as always, but the rates are much less than they used to be. They have also added TV's in all of the rooms and locks on the doors which were not previously available there.

We had a wonderful night there last night. I wish them great success with the much needed changes they have made to give the Inn at Saw Mill a fresh start!
