I am out of step with other reviewers but for good reason. This relatively new restaurant is in the former location of a bakery and cafe. They have done wonders in remodeling. The accoustics, however, are dreadful. In a table of four you can hardly hear yourself think much less your dinner partners. The prices are high, specially for what you get. Entrees start at $19, average about $25 and go as high as $46. These prices are for one dish only, salad and appetizers are extra and run about $7 to $10. Dinner here can easily cost $80 to $100 for two with a glass of wine.

Peasant Restaurant does not have, has ever had, or will ever have a $46 entree on our menu. This reviewer must have mistaken a beautiful Grand Cru Bordeaux, with 8 years of bottle age that we put on our specials board as the $46 item. Our entree menu items range from $18 to $25, with several small plates for starters much cheaper. Specials can run from the mid twenties to $30. Our family always promotes a joyous environment in our Restaurant, self admittedly, it can become boisterous, however, we feel we offer a very special dining experience at very reasonable prices.

We loved the food (especially the Red Hen bread, which we drove up to Waterbury for the next day), and the amazing live jazz in the restaurant. The staff was exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable, and we will most certainly come back the next time we are in Waitsfield.

What wonderfully hearty fare. A one page menu provides just enough variety to please and allows for each dish to be superbly prepared. Several specials round out the intriguing offerings. Seven of us gathered after spending an afternoon photographing. We were pretty hungry and appreciated the ample dishes. Two enjoyed the pasta special, simple homemade sauce and cheese. One ordered broiled chicken, piled high with sauteed mushrooms and served with rice and kale. Four chose the cassoulet of chicken, white beans, and sausage. Everyone was very pleased and too full to try the tempting desserts. Our waitress kept our water glasses and bread basket full. The pace of the meal was just perfect. Although the restaurant was quite full, we didn't feel rushed at all. We will certainly be returning to Peasant very soon.
Most restaurants are closed on Monday. Peasant is open Thursday through Monday.

Having been here when it was another restaurant many years ago, this little gem was delicious! Do book a reservation on a weekend or you will not get in and don't bring your young kids to sit at the bar, it is really not a place for the little ones. This elegant bistro is fine dinning for the Valley.
The bread was fresh and warm with a great pesto oil mix for dipping. There were three in my party, one had the salmon, one the chicken marsala and the other the pasta dish. My only complaint was the wine list was mostly French and not good. I ordered an expensive Pinot Noir that was pretty bad, I should have said no when I tasted it, but we drank it anyway, my fault not theirs, maybe it was suppose to taste that way. They need to add good wines that are not fancy or expensive. A very nice addition to the Valley, friendly staff with good service. We ate here 8/10 and they were turning people away they were so busy.
