I have no reservations about recommending the Mountain View Inn, I have stayed here several times over the last few years - several times when few or no other guests were there and once when the inn was completely full. The location, the history and the special service you receive from the owners are what makes this inn stand out from others in the area.
The location is absolutely ideal for any type of visit - right in the heart of the Green Mountains and minutes from the ski areas and hiking, minutes from downtown Waitsfield and many nice restaurants and bars. A bit further afield and you're in easy reach (30-60 minutes) of the wonderful Vermont villages/small cities of Montpelier, Stowe, Burlington and very easy access over the amazing "gap" road (Route 17) to beautiful Bristol, Vergennes, Middlebury and the Lake Champlain Valley.
The history of the inn is incredible - it's been run by the current owners for the last 40 years, and they have kept as much of the old feel and appearance to the inn as they can - you feel it particularly in the dining room with it's lovely hardwood floor and gigantic table where meals are served. At the same time, they have done quite extensive renovations over the decades to keep guests warm and comfortable and very well fed.

Fred and Suzy are superb hosts and do their best to cater to your every need, and I feel they really get to know their guests well. I'm sad and surprised by previous reviews that reflect poorly on cleanliness, this is simply not true at all. Perhaps they are confusing cleanliness with newness? Not everything in this inn is brand new - in fact over the years Suzy has herself braided many of the beautiful rugs in the inn and made the quilts on many of the beds! A family of 3 boys has been raised in the inn and it is suitably well worn and cozy - why I titled the review as I did, it does really feel like coming home and Fred and Suzy are so friendly and welcoming. Many of the guests at this inn return year in and year out, which I think is a testament to the owners even more than the building itself.
Finally...breakfast...is O-mazing. I think my husband and I look forward to this most of all. We have traveled all over the world for the last decade and never had such delicious and filling breakfasts as we do at the Mountain View Inn. Blueberry pancakes, bacon, "stuffed" french toast, German apple pancake (just like apple pie for breakfast), eggs of any description, coffee, orange juice...I'm drooling...More
